Downstream

Shells Downstream organization is made up of a no of different businesses. Collectively these turn crude oil into a range of refined products, which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use.

Manufacturing business includes Refining as well as Supply and Distribution. Marketing includes Retails, B2B, lubricants and Alternative Energies businesses. Chemicals business has dedicated manufacturing and marketing units of its own.

Shell employed an average of around 97000 people in over 90 countries during the year. 2009 reorganization involved building from the top down a simpler, leaner organizational structure with clearer accountabilities, enabling more customer focus and faster decision making. 7000 employees left in 2010 as part of restructuring and by dec 31st 2010, total staff accounts to 93000

Refining
Have interest in more than 30 refining sites worldwide. Together, they are capable of processing some 4 million barrels of crude oil a day into a wide range of products like petrol, diesel, heating oil, aviation fuel, marine fuel, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas, sulphur and bitumen. Around 40% of our refining capacity is in Europe and Africa, 30% in the Americas and 30% in Asia-Pacific. With the completion of expansion project of the Port Arthur refinery in Texas, USA, it will be their largest refinery with 0.6 million b/d and capable of handling most grades of crude oil, even those of the lowest quality.

Supply & Distribution


A network of some 250 distribution facilities with more than 2500 storage tanks in around 60 countries serves to deliver feedstocks to our refineries and chemical plants as well as finished products to our Marketing businesses and Customers worldwide. y We move products in Europe, USA and other parts of the world through 9000Km of onshore and offshore pipelines. y Our global fleet of around 6000 shell-owned or contracted trucks travels around 1.6 million Km every day, making a delivery somewhere in the world every 8 seconds. y Adopted fuel-saving driving techniques, made larger deliveries and made the best use of vehicle availability to reduce the cost and time of deliveries.

Shells B2B portfolio comprises Marine, Aviation, LPG, Bitumen, Commercial Fuels and Sulphur. Shells Global Customer Service organisation is also part of Shell Global B2B. yFrom January 1 2010, Shells Sulphur and Bitumen businesses merged to become a dedicated Specialities Business. y Shells B2B businesses have provided products and services to commercial customers for well over 100 years.We are present in approximately 90 countries. y Focus is on technology giving customers the assurance of working with a trusted partner to meet both their business needs and environmental concerns.

SHELL Aviation: y Provides fuel every day for around 7000 aircraft at more than 800 airports across some 40 countries. y On average, they refuel a plane every 12 seconds, customers ranging from private pilots to the largest global airlines. y Named Best Aviation Fuel Provider in the first Emerging Markets Aviation Awards May 2010. SHELL Marine products: y Provides fuels, lubricants and related technical services to the marine industry for more than 15000 customer vessels, ranging from large ocean-going tankers to small fishing boats, in more than 600 ports in 48 countries. y Supplies over 100 grades of lubricant and 20 different types of fuel for vessels powered by diesel, steam-turbine and gas-turbine engines.

SHELL LPG: y Provides liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and related services to domestic, commercial and industrial customers around the world for activities as diverse as transport, cooking, heating and lighting. y With around 3500 distributors and 100000 points of sale located in 29 countries, supplies around 30 million customers. SHELL Commercial Fuels: y Provides transport, industrial and heating fuels and related services to more than 200000 customers in more than 20 countries. y Our Commercial Road Transport business supplies road hualage and bus companies worldwide through a global network of sites and offers payment services through Shells card system.

SHELL Specialities: y Provides products and services related to the bitumen residue from crude oil refining and to the sulphur derived from the processing of natural gas and crude oil. y Every day supply to some 1600 customers worldwide around 11000 tonnes of bitumen- enough to repave 350km of road. y Leading premium-grade bitumen supplier in china and the only international bitumen supplier for chinas high-speed railway sector. y Developed innovated bitumen products that can be mixed and laid at temperatures lower than conventional asphalt to reduce energy use and co2 emissions. y Developed innovative sulphur-based products such as Shell Thiopave, a paving material that can prolong road life: Shell Thiocrete a very durable, fast-setting concrete and Shell Thiogro, a new family of fertilisers for sulphur-responsive crops.

Alternative Energies and Co2: Investigating on alternative energy technologies with a long-term aspiration to develop them into business opportunities. y Believe that biofuels available today are the most realistic commercial solution to reduce Co2 emissions in the transport fuels sector over the next 20 years. y Researching advanced biofuel technologies to meet corporate and social responsibilities as well as continuing to explore the potential of hydrogen as an alternative energy carrier for the longer term.

Shell CO2 is responsible for co-ordinating and driving CO2 management activities across all businesses.

Retail
Branded fuel retail network is the worlds largest with around 43000 service stations in more than 80 countries selling more than 145 billion litres of fuel a year. y As part of strategy to refocus our global downstream portfolio on profitability, we plan to exit 35% of their 2009 retail markets, which contain about 5% of shell-branded service stations around the world. y At the same time, continue to invest in selected retail markets such as those of Germany and china. y Shell has a close technical partnership with Ferrari Which helped Ferrari to achieve 10 Formula One World Championship Constructors and 12 World Championship Drivers titles.

Lubricants
Consecutively fourth year, named the number-one global lubricant supplier, selling more lubricants than any other company in the world y 13.4% share of the market in volume terms. y Sells technically advanced lubricants in around 100 countries not only for passenger cars, trucks and coaches but also for industrial machinery in manufacturing, mining, power generation, agriculture and construction. y Top lubricant supplier in the USA- the worlds largest lubricant market y Top international supplier by volume in china- the worlds fastest growing lubricant market. y Shells portfolio of lubricant brands includes Pennzoil, Quaker State, Shell helix, Shell Rotella, Shell Tellus and Shell Rimula.

Chemicals
Produces and sells petrochemicals to 1100 major industrial customers worldwide, with the top 20 customers accounting for about 44% of third party sales proceeds. y Capacity to produce 6 million tonnes of ethylene per annum. y Revenues from these sales made shell 6th largest chemicals concern in world. y Range of petrochemicals include: Base chemicals ethylene, propylene and aromatics First-line derivatives styrene monomer, propylene oxide, solvents, detergent alcohols and ethylene oxide Polymers polytrimethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyethylene All the above items are used to make every day items like plastics, detergents, textiles, medical equipment and computers. y Sold more than 20 million tonnes of bulk petrochemicals in 2010

Trading
Global organisation comprising a network of separate companies that sell crude oil to a wide range of customers within and outside shell. y Shell Trading supports shells Upstream and Downstream businesses by trading natural gas, electrical power, crude oil, refined products, chemical feedstocks and environmental products. y Shell Trading companies operate out of a variety of locations, including Houston, London, Dubai, Rotterdam and Singapore.
