Alexa Swarts 8/26/13 P6 Nan Madol Nan Madol is an ancient and ruined, once-great city at the eastern coast

of Pohnpei. Micronesia. It is made up of several man-made islands and a series of canals and water passageways that connect it all together. The islands are composed of large black lava stones over coral reefs. It is unknown how these islands came to be, as the people at the time they were built did not have the proper tools to move these large and heavy stones into place. It is very similar to the mystery of how the Egyptian pyramids were built, as they too did not have proper instruments or means of building such large and stable structures. Another interesting part of Nan Madol is the underwater tunnels that connect the island with each other. Again the question arises, How were these built? These questions are still unanswered to this day, and the forgotten city remains a mystery. The construction of Nan Madol is similar to the construction of the pyramids built during the Roman dynasty. Both were built with enormous and very heavy stones. It is a mystery how these rocks were transported, where they came from, how they were positioned, etc. There are many tales and folklore about the construction of each, about black magic, giants, and other mythical ideas, which leads me to believe that there must have been tools, or some other practical way to complete the construction of each.
