Making a Difference with Print

Printmaking Research Assignment Please complete. This assignment is worth 50 points total.! The following provides the guidelines for the assignment: Dene the process and provide an example of silkscreen printing. (10 points). Find an example of a tshirt design that promotes a!cause. What is the artist trying to communicate? (10 points) Here are some sample websites to explore: www.fatcap.com www.anti-war.us We will be using the screen printing method for our next art project. (T-shirts will not be provided.) In order to prepare for this project you will also need to do some research. Prints, posters, and even T-shirts can promote a cause. You need to nd a cause that you will be able to represent with a simplied or graphic design. What upsets you the most in the world? What changes are needed? Pick one topic to focus on. Write a paragraph describing this topic, then explain what changes need to be made in order to help solve the problem. Your paragraph should be 5-7 sentences. Goals: Students will: 1. Find an example of protest art and write about what the artist is trying to communicate or promote. 2. Research and write about!a cause!that can make a difference in the world. 3. Develop, revise, and transfer an image based on a cause to be used for the!silkscreen process. 4. Use the screen printing method to create an original work of art. 5. Revise the stencil as needed during the printmaking process. 6. Experiment with color choices of ink, fabric, and paper. ! Process: 1.! Complete the brainstorm worksheet in order to develop ideas for images and text that you can!further develop!for your tshirt design. ! 2.! In pencil, develop 2 sketches in your sketchbook of different garphic tshirt designs for the cause you have chosen.! Include both images and text in order to convey your message.! Use a full page in your sketcbook for each design OR you may work you image/design up in PhotoShop. ! 3.! See me to help you choose your best design to work with. !

4.! Research simple fonts on the computer that you can use for your tshirt design.! Print out your tshirt text in the size and font of your choice.! ! Font website: www.dafont.com ! 4.! Revise!and simplify!your nal design without taking away from your original message.! Use tracing paper and pencil and any other tools you might need such as a ruler, compass, etc. to nalize your design.! Incorporate the text you printed into your nal design.!!The entire design!must must be nished in the actual size to be transferred to your tshirt. ! 5.! Once your nal design is complete on tracing paper in pencil, outline!all lines in Sharpie.! Be sure to again use a ruler, compass, etc. ! 6.! After completing the previous step, determine which areas of the design will be positive (printed) and which areas will be negative (shirt).! Blacken in the!positive areas, and leave the negative areas white.! Try to avoid very thin lines and text.! ! 7. Wrap silkscreen mesh around a wooden frame. 8. Place the wrapped silkscreen over your drawn out or printed out design. Trace with pencil. 9. Using Modge Podge, paint over all of the negative spaces (on both sides). Be careful and watch for dripping. Do not get Modge Podge in the positive spaces. ! 9.! Cover the edges of your screen with duct tape. This will keep ink from seeping through the screen around the edges. ! 10.! You are ready to print!! Experiment and print 2-3 prints on paper. Use your best color combo for your nal print on the t-shirt. ! Assessment: - 3 quality prints (T-shirt print and 2 paper prints)
