8 Sampling

Objective: to carry out the different sampling techniques in the laboratory.

Materials: hite !ean seeds" mongo seeds" read beans" peanuts" quadrat materials" plastic strings

#rocedure: $. '. %esignate the e&periment site on the laboratory floor. Scatter the different seeds on this designated e&periment area. %esignate each type of seed as a separate species ( species $)*+.

A. ,andom Sampling: A. $ -se of .uadrats A.$.a /hro0ing .uadrats: stand one side of the e&periment area and 0ith your bac1 on it thro0 the quadrat. 2ount each type of seeds and record in a tabulated form. ,epeat the procedure on all the other three sides of the e&periment site then move to the center and thro0 the quadrat t0o times each time facing a different direction. ,ecord all results in a tabulated form. A.'.b %ra0 lots: Number the floor tiles in the e&periment site. 2ut small pieces of paper and number it corresponding to the total number of tiles. %ra0 a number and count each type of seeds on the floor tile corresponding to the dra0n number and record in a tabulated form. ,epeat the same procedure 3&. !. Systematic Sampling !.$ 4ine /ransect Method: Anchor one end of a string at the edge of one side of the e&periment area and lay the string on a straight line till the edge at the other end of the e&periment area. ith a tape measure or a foot rule count each type of seed every t0o feet until you reach the other end. !. ' !elt transect Method. /his is an e&panded line transect. 4ay t0o strings) $ foot apart from one end to the other end of the e&periment area. /hen using the quadrat" lay the quadrat every one foot apart from one end to the other end of the e&periment area counting each type of seed in every quadrat. ,ecord data in !.$ and !.' in a tabulated form. ,esults: $. 5rom your tabulated results" Ans0er the follo0ing:

hich species can you conclude as the dominant 6species7. hat can you say about the type of population distribution of the 6 species7.

$.8Solve for the population density of each species.
