What is a Watt?
Rating your electricity uses & costs

Definitions
1. 1 watt = the amount of power needed to lift a 100g object 1 meter in 1 sec. 2. Power (watts) = work/time 3. Electric appliances are rated in watts 4. Electric usage uses kilowattsone kilowatt (Kw) = 1000 watts 5. Electric usage is measure in kilowatt hrs (Kwh)the number of Kilowatts used each hour

Applications
6. By using
a. the appliance ratings in watts, b. the amount of hours it is on, c. and the cost of the electricity per Kwh,

7. We can figure out what it will cost to run an appliance for any amount of time.

Process
Step 1find an appliances power ratings
o 60 watt light bulb

Step 2change watts to kilowatts o 601000 = 0.06 Kw Step 3multiply it by the number of hours used per day
o 0.06 Kw X 8 hrs = 0.48 Kwh

Step 4multiply it by whatever time period you want

o 0.48 Kwh X 30 days = 14.4 Kwh/month

Step 5multiply your final figure by the cost of electricity to get the cost
o 14.4 Kwh X $.11/Kwh = $1.58

To run the light bulb for one year 8 hrs/day = 0.48 Kwh X 365 days X $.11/Kwh = $19.27/yr
