Text Structures Answer the following questions before you read the text. 1.

Survey the text: What features are used to help you understand the information?

2. Scan the text: What is the purpose?

3. Scan the text: What signal words are used? (i.e. for example, involves, different from, same as, however, because, as a result, conclusion, first, before, finally, etc.)

4. Consider the text: What text structures are used? (i.e. descriptive, compare/contrast, cause and effect, problem/solution, sequence)

5. Analyze the text: What is the main idea (or ideas)? Is this consistent with your purpose for reading?

6. Plan for reading: Which tool will you use to take notes from the text? (i.e. concept maps, Cornell notes, split page notes)
