Reading and academic success

Reading allows students acces to information presented in core subjects in education.

But kids are not interested in reading and this is a major concern not only for teachers but also for parents, politicians and administrators.

Teachers and parents blame the internet for the lack of interest in reading shown by teens. For them, the time kids spend surfing the web, playing video games online or doing any of the activities available on Internet has become a problem: students dont do homework or read anymore.

Constantly, school teachers strive to find ways to motivate students to read and to build reading skills as a prerequisite to achieve academic success.

Good readers can understand the individual sentences and the organizational structure of a piece of writing. They can comprehend ideas, follow arguments, and detect implications. They know most of the words in the text already, but they can also determine the meaning of many of the unfamiliar words from the context - failing this, they can use their dictionary effectively to do so. In summary, good readers can extract from the writing what is important for the particular task they are employed in. And they can do it quickly!
