Lesson Plan for Art Education Majors


Title: Colorful Caterpillars Part 2 Grade: 1 Unit: Primary/secondary colors Time: 40min. Description/ Learning Target: Students are going to make their rainbow circles from last week into a caterpillar. We will read a book, and look at some pictures of caterpillars to helps draw designs on them. Learning Target: We can explain what the proper environment is for a caterpillar, and add shapes and designs to make them unique. Behavioral Objectives/Essential Questions (3-5): Students will be able to identify primary and secondary colors. Students will be able to identify where a caterpillar lives. Students will be able to differentiate their caterpillar by adding patterns, shapes, and lines. Pennsylvania State Academic Standards:

Modifications for Individual Differences: If a student is having trouble with adding the proper environment then they will be able to look at books for a reference. If a student is exceeding expectations with their skills, they will be asked to put extreme detail into their environment. If students seem to be finishing early with their project they are able to glue their picture to another piece of paper to create a frame around it. Materials and/or Equipment: 1. 2. 3. 4. Preparation: Books from the library, cut green paper for them to glue to her projects and projects will need to be dry.

Anticipatory Set: Ask the class about what we did last class. What are the primary colors? What are the secondary colors? * list on board as students answer Invite friends to have a seat on the ground to read a book. Read Caterpillar book. Where do Caterpillars live? Define: Environment- where something lives. (ie Lions live in a safari {grass, rocks, water, food} etc) What patterns were seen in the illustrations? What do Caterpillars eat? Student work time: 1. Student will return to their seats and I will pass out their projects from last week (should be located on their classes portfolios). 2. Sleeves up. 3. Each table will get oil pastels. 4. Students will be asked to draw the parts of a caterpillar want to add. 5. Then student will be asked to create a home for their caterpillar; an environment. 6. Students can add more detail to their caterpillar. 7. *Time permitting; students are then going to glue their Caterpillar to a green piece of paper, to a frame for their artwork. *Review gluing techniques. Clean-up: Crayons put away. Put project in portfolios. Be sitting quietly. Closure: What is an environment? What do caterpillars eat? Where is in a caterpillars environment? What colors can caterpillars be? Evaluation of the lesson: Grading the student: Students will be graded on effort, completion, and understanding of project. Within the effort category they will have to use the materials correctly, and safely. Did students mix secondary colors in correct spaces? Did students add details to caterpillars and an appropriate environment?
