Smart glass, or switchable glass, also called smart windows or switchable windows in its application to windows or skylights, refers to glass or glazing that changes light transmission properties when voltage, light or heat is applied. Smart glass controls the amount of light (and thereby heat) transmission. When activated, the glass changes from transparent to translucent, blocking some or all wavelengths of light. Smart glass technologies include electrochromic, photochromic, thermochromic, suspended particle, micro-blind and liquid crystal devices. Smart glass can save costs for heating, air-conditioning and lighting and avoid the cost of installing and maintaining motorized light screens or blinds or curtains. Most smart glass blocks ultraviolet light, reducing fabric fading; for SPD-type smart glass, this is achieved in conjunction with low emissivity coatings. Smart Glass provides a simple and cost effective alternative to other Switchable Glass technologies. It is manufactured by UV bonding Smart Film to the glass surface. This UV bonding process means that the Smart Film can be simply applied to any type or thickness of glass, creating a solution with optimum clarity.

How Does Smart Glass Work ?

Switchable glass panes dim and brighten at will. When you want sun to shine through your windows, simply flip a switch to turn off the tint. You want to open a room, another flip and the windows will blur, become opaque, or slowly darken. Though they all perform the same task, there are several types of smart glass available. One of the original forms is photo chromatic technology which doesn't require manual operation. Similar to sunglasses, these panes immediately tint when the sun hits, which is efficient since they don't call for any electricity or hands-on direction.
