Architectural Technology Program Focuses on Teaching Students the Business of Building Design Services

Did you know that most provinces in Canada have an association representing architectural technologists and technicians? These organizations assist in securing jobs for their members, among other things. n !ntario, for e"ample, professionals who attend an architecture program in Canada such as Centennial College#s $rchitectural Technology are represented by the !ntario $ssociation of $pplied $rchitectural %ciences &!$$$%', which awards a ()icensed Technologist !$$* designation. The !ntario $ssociation of $rchitects &!$$' partnered with the provincial engineering technologist#s association &!ntario $ssociation of Certified +ngineering Technicians and Technologists or !$C+TT' and established the re,uirement that only !$C+TT engineering technologist members are eligible to be licensed to provide architectural services. Centennial College#s $rchitectural Technology program actually gives its grads the opportunity to pursue !$$$% membership, which can lead to !$$ membership. These memberships are important for those whose responsibility it is to provide building design services and solutions, negotiate the construction project, and manage the process from conception through to completion. +,ually important is the education these professionals receive. $t Centennial College, training takes three years and includes a project/based curriculum that focuses on a different building type each semester. 0ith classes being taught by program faculty with advanced degrees, licenses, and credentials in architecture, architectural technology, building science, engineering, and green building, including many current industry practitioners, students can rest assured that they are receiving e"ceptional training. $ focus on energy/efficient design, sustainable design and construction strategies, and protecting the environment are among the specific topics covered in the $rchitectural Technology. %pecific courses include 1nderstanding the !ntario -uilding Code, -uilding 0ithin the 2unicipality, Technical 0riting, $dvanced %tructures, +nvironment, Design and Computer $ided Drafting 3roject, 4istory of 0estern $rchitecture, -uilders and Contractors, $pplied 3hysics, 2aterials and 2ethods and more. During their time in the offering, students prepare drawings for residential, institutional, commercial, industrial, and multi/use buildings. They also become familiar with building materials, construction methods, structural design, mechanical and electrical services, building codes, contracts, specifications, and the business environment for providing design and construction services. The architecture program re,uires applicants to have at minimum an !ntario %econdary %chool Diploma &!%%D' or e,uivalent, or mature student status &56 years or older'. They must also have completed the +nglish 7rade 58 C or 1 credential, or e,uivalent &minimum grade re,uired' or take the Centennial College +nglish %kills $ssessment for $dmission9 and 2athematics 7rade 55 2 or 1, or 58 C or 1 credit, or e,uivalent &minimum grade re,uired' or take a Centennial College +ngineering 2ath %kills $ssessment for $dmission.
