HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

This manual is intended to help you become proficient at creating surveys using the iJoomla Survey component. It has been organized for both easy reading and to serve as a reference guide. All steps begin by selecting iJoomla Surveys from your Component menu list. We will then refer to the left menu navigation as iJoomla Surveys. We use the standard command -> to symbolize moving to the next level on a menu. To use iJoomla Survey, you will need at least basic Joomla Knowledge and experience. Actions will be colored in Green and have a different font. Like this.

WHAT IS IJOOMLA SURVEYS?

iJoomla Surveys is a component for Joomla that allows online businesses to create surveys, collect information and analyze data for business, education, research, marketing and more. You will be able to add, edit and remove surveys, build pages, create a variety of different types of questions and build Skip Actions to manage the flow of your respondents. Features iJoomla Surveys contains a large range of different features. In this manual, we will explain each of the features in detail: Unlimited surveys with an unlimited number of questions and pages; Invitations delivered by pop-up; Pop-ups not killed by pop-up blockers; Complete control over the look of your survey; Surveys may be public access or for registered users only; Support for creating surveys in all languages; Optional email notifications on each survey completion; Choose to publish/un-publish surveys, pages and questions; Control the order of surveys, pages and questions; Add images to your survey and page descriptions; Choose to show or hide survey results from respondents; Select publish start and end date; Redirect the visitors at the end of the survey to a thank you page or to an URL of your choice; Twelve types of questions, from multiple choice to one-answer and from matrix to essay; Skip Action that modifies question sequence according to previous answers; Randomized answer choices;

SURVEY STRUCTURE

Each survey contains three levels: Surveys are containers that hold one or more Pages; Pages are containers that hold one or more Questions; Questions are individual units that make up the survey and are displayed on pages.

For example, the owner of a site about pets could choose to create a number of separate surveys, each dedicated to a different type of pet. Each survey could then have separate pages about different subjects, so one page could list questions about exercise, another about food and so on. Each page would contain a number of questions. What you can do with iJoomla surveys iJoomla Surveys can be used for a variety of purposes. Use it to: Collect information from current customers; Gather data about potential customers; Learn about your visitors; Gain feedback on your site/business; Create exciting PR material; Make informed business decisions; Learn which features and products your users enjoy the most; Identify new growth areas; And much, much more.

QUESTION TYPES

iJoomla Surveys allows you to use a number of different question types to obtain the information you need: To view an example of each question, please click here.
CHOICE - ONE ANSWER

Restricts respondents to choose just one answer. For example: Gender? Man or woman. There are three ways to present a Choice - One Answer question: - The answer choices will be displayed vertically. Works best with between two and eight answer choices. CHOICE - ONE ANSWER (HORIZONTAL) - The answer choices will be displayed horizontally. Not suitable for questions with more than four answer choices. CHOICE - ONE ANSWER (MENU) - Answer choices will be display as a menu. Although perfect for questions with many possible responses, such as those requiring respondents to enter their country or occupation, drop-down menus require three mouse actions instead of one, and can therefore increase the drop-out rate.
CHOICE - ONE ANSWER (VERTICAL)

24

Question Types |Copyright of iJoomla.com

CHOICE - MULTIPLE ANSWERS

Allows respondents to select more than one answer. For example: What type of credit card do you own? Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club. In general, receiving multiple answers can make data analysis difficult so only use this option when strictly appropriate.
25 Question Types |Copyright of iJoomla.com

There are two methods of displaying Choice - Multiple Answers questions: -Answer choices will be displayed vertically. Works best with between two and six answer choices. CHOICE - MULTIPLE ANSWERS (HORIZONTAL) - Answer choices will be displayed horizontally. Works best with a limited number of answers.
CHOICE - MULTIPLE ANSWERS (VE RTICAL )

MATRIX

Matrix questions allow you to collect cross information between two scaled parameters. Questions about frequency or degree of preference are perfect for this type of question. For example, a survey about eating habits could ask: How often do you eat the following foods: Meat, Vegetables, Fish, Dairy and offer the following columns: Frequently, Not Frequently, Never. Matrix questions can be displayed three ways:

26

Question Types |Copyright of iJoomla.com

- Perfect for a scale. For example, you could ask what respondents thought of a product, and create a column that allowed them to score it from 1 to 10 or Excellent to Poor etc. MATRIX - MULTIPLE ANSWERS PER ROW - Allows respondents to choose more than one answer in each row. MATRIX - MULTIPLE ANSWERS PER ROW (MENUS) -This method allows respondents to choose from a menu with multiple answer choices. Ideal when you want respondents to state their opinion of different attributes in each row.
MATRIX - ONE ANSWER PER ROW

27

Question Types |Copyright of iJoomla.com

OPEN ENDED

Open Ended questions allow you to collect actual sentences. Although they demand more from respondents, theyre perfect if you want to collect feedback, ideas, stories or anything else you cant include in a variable. There are five ways to ask Open Ended questions: - This method will display a simple text box in which people can enter a short answer. For example: What is your favorite name for a dog? OPEN ENDED - ONE OR MORE LINES WI TH PROMPT - This method will display a text box next to each of the answer choices, allowing them to enter a short answer for each field. For example, Enter your favorite name for baby girl; baby boy. OPEN ENDED ESSAY - This method will display a large text area. Ideal for feedback, testimonials, ideas and stories etc. OPEN ENDED - CONSTANT SUM - Respondents can enter a figure from 1-100 in each field. The sum of all the numbers they enter should be exactly 100. For example, a survey for teachers might ask, Please assign a number from 1-100 to describe the amount of time you spend on: teaching; quizzes; marking; attending meetings. OPEN ENDED - DATE AND/OR TIME - This method allows you to obtain specific dates or times. For example, a survey of university graduates might ask respondents to provide their date of graduation.

TIP:

SKIP ACTION

View video tutorial Branching and Skip Action allow respondents to receive specific question sets based on their previous answers. For example, on being asked about the quality of your site, a visitor might reply that it is "Very good." The next question then could ask: "What made it so good?"
30 Skip Action |Copyright of iJoomla.com

Similarly, if the respondent indicated that his experience of the site was Poor, the next question could be: "What could we do to make the site better?" Branching in this way is accomplished by creating a Skip Action in which you specify the condition and the consequences. Because it is only possible to skip forwards, not backwards, through your survey, branching must be carefully charted. Furthermore, all of your questions must be in their final order before the branching pattern is implemented. Conditional Branching occurs only if the condition is met. An example of conditional branching is the statement: "If the answer to question #3 is A, then Skip to Page Demographics.
ADDING SKIP ACTION

To add Skip Action, select Manage surveys-> Skip Action and click New.

Enter a name for this logical sequence, and choose the survey, page and question to which you wish to apply the condition. The Compare drop down menu allows you to choose whether you want the Skip Action to occur when a condition is the same or different to an answer choice. So if a response Equals yes, for example, a particular action may be taken. If the response is different than yes, an alternative response may be taken.
31 Skip Action |Copyright of iJoomla.com

Answer value lists all possible answers. Selecting more than one answer on the list (by pressing the CTRL key) allows you to specify whether the sequence will be dependent on all the answer choices being chosen or any one of them. To make the sequence dependent on all answer choices, select the AND condition; to make the sequence dependent on one answer choice, select the OR condition. Next, you will need to create the consequence of this condition. You can choose between Jump to and Skip, which lets the respondent jump to a selected page, skip the next page in sequence or jump to the end of the survey. On the Page drop down menu, choose the page to skip or jump to. For example, the sequence below describes a Skip Action question used on the survey for iVegetarian.net. We created a page called Demographics and added a question that checks whether this respondent is a vegetarian. The next question would depend on the response: Survey: Veggie Survey Page: Demographics Question: Are you a vegetarian? Compare: Equals to Answers (OR): Yes Action: Jump to Page: For vegetarian

32

Skip Action |Copyright of iJoomla.com

If the answer to the questions is (Equals to)Yes, the survey will Jump to the page called For vegetarian, a page that only people who are vegetarians should answer.

EDITING A PUBLISHED SURVEY

Although you can edit a published survey in the same way that you can edit an unpublished survey, remember that the integrity of your results may be compromised. Only edit a published survey to: Fix typos; Add images or change the appearance with CSS; Move questions from one page to the other (if these questions are not a part of a Skip Action); Change the descriptions or names of the survey and pages; Add a completely new page.

The following changes may hurt the integrity of your survey and are not recommended: Changing questions or answers; Adding/changing Skip Action; Changing the order of pages or questions.

For this reason, we highly recommend you fully design and finalize your survey before you publish it.
REMOVING A SURVEY

To remove a survey, select Survey manger->surveys and check the box next to the survey youd like to delete. Click the Delete button. Warning: Once you delete a survey, you will lose all the data youve collected. It is better to unpublish a survey than to delete it.

DUPLICATING A SURVEY

Duplicate a survey can make creating new surveys easier and faster, especially if many of the pages and questions are similar or identical. Re-launching a survey can also allow you to compare results at different times. For example, if users gave your site a low rating and you have subsequently made a number of changes, duplicating the survey will let you know whether your changes were effective. To duplicate an entire survey, with all its pages and questions, select Survey manager->surveys. Check the box next to the survey youd like to duplicate and press Copy. An identical survey will be added.

VIEWING SURVEY RESPONSES

To view the results of your survey, select Manage surveys -> surveys and click Stats on your surveys row.
