Dont Pollute Grade Level: forth grade Objectives: The student will: discuss ways that people harm/damage

e the earth. create a persuasive poster to promote clean a clean environment by persuading people not to pollute. Scaffolding: The teacher will ask What are ways that humans harm/damage the earth? The teacher will then write on the chalkboard, the responses of the students. Focus: The teacher will read Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg, followed by Is there anything we could add to our list on the chalkboard, after reading this story? (There might by one or two things) Rationale: The student is expected to: make wise choices in the use and conservation of resources and the disposal or recycling of materials. (TEKS 4.1B) evaluate the impact of research on scientific thought, society, and the environment. (TEKS 4.3D) Materials: Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg Crayons/markers for the students 18 x 24 of white construction paper Reusable items (1 each) of 2 liter coke bottle, newspaper, paper towel tube, gallon milk jug, and coffee can Instructional Input: Guided Practice: The teacher will include class in a group discussion of what are some things you could do to help the environment stay clean? Here is where you can talk about the 3Rs Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This is what we can do to keep our future bright. Modeling: The teacher can create a poster of her/his own or draw one on the board. Independent Practice: 1. Break the students into pairs or they can do this individually. 2. Tell students that they are to create a persuasive poster to promote clean a clean environment by persuading people not to pollute. There are two requirements for this poster: 1) there must be a catchy slogan (you may need to explain what slogan is), and 2) there must be a picture to go with the slogan.

Evaluation: Have students share they posters. Teacher can ask students: How did you come up with your slogan idea? What is the message you want viewers to get when they see your poster? What actions, if any, does your poster seem to be designed to promote? Who will they influence? In what ways will it influence them? Closure: Break the class into groups or as a class; come up with 3 ways to reuse the items the teacher has brought in. If in groups, share ideas with the class, and possibly get new ideas.
