Lucas Kick Drum Improvement Part 1 This is your EQ at the moment:

Its super mental! All you will get from this is a washy, sub noise with no real definition, punch, or attack. Mute the Test Ocsillator for now. Also bypass the reverb on the kick. See Kick Drum Processing Tips.pdf and How to Get a Punchier Kick Drum with EQ and Compression.mp4. (Go to the website: Logic Production Techniques -> Drums and Beats Production Techniques). Very quickly, my advice is to cut the sub out of the kick, boost in the lows around 90Hz (a wide boost), and then look to compress the kick so that the initial transient is let through, but the resonance afterwards is compressed and make-up gained.

Part 2 Now youve improved the EQ and added some compression, you can experiment with adding some reverb back into the mix. Dont overdo this! Yes, you can have some reverb on the kick but (a) dont have the wet too high something subtle will

be more than adequate and (b) try EQing the subs and lows out of the actual reverb. Go to here on the reverb for the reverb EQ.

Click here to activate the low shelf. Your looking for something similar to whats above. Part 3 Now you can try add back in your Test Oscillator. Again, Dont overdo this! You are looking to blend in a little sub and weight, so that you notice when its not there rather than have it over-take everything else. I got something nicer at 40-45Hz (no lower than this!), with the test oscillator set to about 7db. Trust and use your ears! Volume Balance Everything is running way to hot too loud! Your master output is clipping big time! Everything needs bringing down. Two things to do here: Part 1 Grab everything without volume automation and turn down by at least 10db. Part 2 Reduce all the volume automation by 10db as well. To do this open up the automation (press A on the keyboard) and drag this slider at the beginning of each track:

If its awkward to get right, zoom in more to give yourself more room to move to the correct db level. OVERALL AIM to sort out your kick drum so that its punchy, without being too sub frequency orientated or too washy with reverb. Also, to sort out your levels so that you have headroom at the master output (at least 6db of headroom).
