M (10/28) Introduction to Unit: Students will engage in a short discussion on culture, ethnicity and multiculturalism.

This discussion will lead into students taking the PreAssessment. Ethnicity Background: Students will map out their own ethnic backgrounds in a PPT, Prezi or Poster board. TH (10/31) Hawaii Plantation System Timeline Creation: Students will break up into groups and create two charts. One will illustrate the Plantation System Hierarchy & how this system separated ethnicities by race and culture. 2nd map will create a timeline of ethnic arrivals to Hawaii, based on population and year. TH (11/7) Picture Bride The Movie Students will finish the Picture Bride Movie and will engage in a short discussion on the Picture Bride System Response: Students will write short response on the Picture Bride Move, following questions on how they would feel if they were Hana (character from movie).

M (11/11) Introduction to Pidgin (HCE) Students will describe their experiences with the Pidgin dialect in Hawaii, they will watch a short video clip from Da Pidgin Coup and engage in a formative assessment of the Pidgin Coup

T (11/12) Is Pidgin or HCE an official language? Students will be provided sources that analyze the definition of a language. They will explore the origins of pidgin in the Plantation Era and how it was created as a medium of communication.

TH (11/14) Position Paper Students will use their background research on the usage of HCE/Pidgin, they will determine whether Pidgin is susceptible language that should be used and encouraged in the classroom environment. They will provide valid sources to their arguments in a short yet concise 3-4 page paper.

Students will use this knowledge to determine whether Pidgin is a defined language. They will explore other dialects of Creole English used in various regions. Block Schedule
Radford High School follows a block schedule period. On Mondays, students attend all 7 periods which means that I see both of my Modern Hawaiian History classes (Period 2 & 7). Then on Tuesdays & Thursdays, it is odd periods and Wednesday, Fridays, it is even periods. Therefore, the blank days in the calendar mean that I am teaching the same lesson plan as the previous date (odd period 7 on Tuesdays & Thursdays).
