Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM. Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child.

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 103 Curriculum in Early Childhood course during the fall semester of 2013, our class worked collaboratively in small groups to create a unit framework. We had to choose an overall theme, my groups theme was recycling, and we used all of the academic subjects to plan developmentally appropriate activities for young children. In addition to the activities our groups had to choose at least five pieces of high quality children literature. We included foundations that corresponded accordingly to each of the activities we formulated. (NAEYC, 2010).

Analysis of What I Learned:

I learned how to properly write objectives, how to match appropriate foundations with our objectives, and how to search for high quality books for all young children. I also learned how to share ideas of new recourses that are available with a group. With my group we investigated developmentally appropriate practice activities and decided upon different developmentally appropriate practice activities to include.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

My competence in this standard is proven by my ability to design, implement, and evaluate on unit framework guidelines set forth by the Indiana Foundations for Young Children. The unit framework includes each of the academic subjects as well as resources. It shows that I understand the importance of developmental domains and academic disciplines in the early childhood curriculum for each and every young child.
