Joy Treasure Mr. Newman English 101: Rhetoric 4 November 2013 Do Dreams Reflect Reality? Almost every person in the world dreams, whether they remember, or forget. Dreams derive from unconscious desires that are hidden within ourselves. It could be as simple as seeing someone one day, and dreaming you were marrying them that night. In her short story, Flight Patterns, Sherman Alexie writes about the main character, Williams unconscious thoughts and desires are explained through his dreams, good and bad. There are different aspects that show psychoanalytical ideas as well throughout the story. Alexie uses Williams unconscious thoughts and desires to show his personality through his dreams. William travels quite often, leaving his wife and daughter home. Williams wife, Marie, is introduced as being a sex addict when Alexie writes that there are, erotic dangers of loving a Spokane Indian woman. William and Marie have an impulsive relationship where at some times, William wants to grab his wifes breasts at inappropriate times, and she wants to have sex at impulsive times: he also loved to watch her lovely ass when she walked, and stare down the front of her loose shirts when she leaned over, and grab her breasts at wildly inappropriate timesduring dinner parties, and piano recitals (51). When William leaves his family, he is very unsure of leaving them alone. He is obsessed with making sure theyre okay and calling them as soon as he gets somewhere: Marie was always waiting for William to call (53). At night when he is sleeping he has unusual dreams. He has dreams of his wife and daughter being raped; he has dreams of them being killed.QUOTE******* Surely one must think why he dreams of such things. At the start of every trip, he has nightmares of Marie and Grace being raped. William dreams of these terrible things because he feels helpless when he is away. He cannot do anything, and no one is there to help them in case they get into trouble. William feels lonely without his wife and daughter. The odd obsession of William missing his family when he leaves works its way in when he feels lonely
