Lipnicky English 106 10 October 2013 Literacy Essay Remediation People do not read as much as they used to. It is all too common to hear students and other young people- and even adults- profess their hatred of reading. This is a growing trend that must not be allowed to continue, as reading is a powerful tool that builds intelligence. It may be a daunting task to convert the many anti-reading advocates that already exist, but it is possible to nip this problem in the bud. If parents and other role models advocate the power and enjoyment of reading to young people, then the aforementioned outlook can easily change. There is no better time to expose someone to something than when that person is a child. The reading they are exposed to does not need to be scholarly or educational. In fact, it is probably best to expose children to simple stories that they will enjoy. This way, they will retain a positive feeling towards reading as they get older, which can then be used in tandem scholarly work. All in all, parents (and anyone else who has influence over children) must advocate reading to their children as soon as possible, so that the children will grow to become intelligent and complex thinkers.
