December 5, 2013 Amy Tan 1000 N. Alameda Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 Dear Amy Tan, I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Luz Tellez, and I'm majoring in Sociology at Cal State University Northridge. I've studied many reading assignments, but yours has endured a meaningful message in my life. Your writing caught my attention and assisted me to appreciate being bilingual. Im writing in regard to your article Mother Tongue, which Ive had the pleasure of reading in my English class that I found vastly significant. As I read the article, every page, every quote, and every tale taught me more than I ever thought an article could. Your journey growing up and trying to find your passion instead of following into racial assumptions and expectations mirrored my passions to do the same. Tan you simply have a genuine heart and try your best to help your Mother as much as you can. For example, on one occasion, you began using the phone to communicate with others as your mother. My favorite quote of yours embraces your language and identity," I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth" (76). I recognize the courage it took to recover this experience about your mothers "broken" language. Upon reading your experiences, I began evaluating my relationship with my mother. Being bilingual is something my mother is very pleased with. As a Spanish woman studying a new language requires a long time. I have truly begun gaining confidence with your story and value the work my mother did to raise me as a bilingual child. Your honesty in writing this piece has inspired in me the courage to face my world. I look forward to reading more of your work. Yours truly,
