The Contrasting Duo New Title! In many novels characters show how they act differently when exposed to similar situations. A better topic sentence, but it still needs some work. In the novel, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks, readers are exposed to this. World War Z is classified as an apocalyptic horror novel due to its capability of startling readers by introducing horror by conveying eerie and dark atmospheres. The novel is characterized by the unique way it is structured since it is based on interviews with a new character introduced each chapter. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War was inspired by the novel The Good War by Studs Terkel. The novel was also inspired by George A. Romeros zombie films. The main purpose of World War Z was for Brooks to show his concern for government ineptitude and American isolation, as well as emphasizing on survivalism and uncertainty. The novel was praised by most critics and received a score of 4.5 out of 5 from Barnes and Noble and a score of 4 out of 5 from Good Reads. According to a critic from Good Reads, The more journalistic and interview approach to constructing the narrative limits how much color the author can impart on any given character. Question and Answer is inherently dry, no matter how exciting the events described are intended to be. Another critic stated that, The novel is one story told by several different people. There is continuity in the order in which the stories are told to us, and sometimes one survivor's account answers a question that was raised by another survivor. This shows that different readers have their own views on the novel. Some may enjoy reading it and others may

"#$%&'()*! +! not. It all depends on ones taste in novels. Unnecessary information, every novel has its good and bad reviews. Instead of writing this, provide an example of when Max Brooks stated that he was inspired to write the novel by Terkel. In the novel two important characters, Kwang Jingshu and Fernando Oliveira, showed readers how they dealt with similar situations and yet they took different paths out of them. Fernando Oliveira and Kwang Jingshu are key characters that allowed the apocalyptic horror genre to flourish by contrasting each others actions. A better structured thesis that still needs some improvement. Kwang Jingshu is a doctor in China who witnessed the first zombie war. His purpose in the novel is to treat the infected patients and share his experience facing the zombie apocalypse in a doctors point of view. He would say, What could I say? The younger doctors, the kids who think medicine is just a way to pad their bank accounts, they certainly werent going to go help some nongmin just for the sake of helping. I guess Im still an old revolutionary at heart. Our duty is to hold ourselves responsible to the people, (Ch. 2). He always showed his will in helping others by not letting money be the reason for having the career he withholds. He even sacrificed his freedom in order to treat patients, which shows that nothing could be as important to him than making a difference in someones life. When first exposed to Patient Zero, Jingshu feared the twelve-year-old child. He stated that he was, truly scared, of this frail child, (Ch. 2). However, Jingshu did not let his fear stop him from helping the poor child and he immediately took samples of the patients blood to run tests. As he examined Patient Zero, he discovered that he needed to discover the cause of the infection. He did this by asking the patients mother about it. After receiving very dull answers, Jingshu then seeked advice from his colleague, Dr. Kuei. This shows how passionate Jingshu is about his career. Jingshu really cared about his patients and he would not stop looking for answers until he finally found the cause of

Escareno, ,! the outbreak. As a result of Jingshus persistence in finding answers to the outbreak, he was sent to jail. The narrator stated, Kwang Jingshu was arrested by the MSS and incarcerated without formal charges. By the time he escaped, the outbreak had spread beyond Chinas borders, (Ch. 2). If Jingshu had not been arrested he would have been able to keep on helping the infected people and maybe the outbreak would not have escaladed as quickly. Kwang Jingshu is an example of what a true doctor should be since he sacrificed his freedom for the sake of others. Added more quotes so that there would be more analysis other than summary. Still need to focus more on the analysis part. In World War Z, Fernando Oliveira was an emaciated drug-addict that was a doctor in Brazil. He had assisted Dr. Silva during a heart transplant surgery. During his interview Oliveira stated, It killed my ego to have to work withunderthat prick, treating me like I was a firstyear resident. But what was I going to do. Herr Muller needed a new heart and my beach house needed a new herbal Jacuzzi, (Ch. 5). This showed that all Oliveira cared about was his well being. If he were a caring doctor just like Kwang Jingshu, the last thing on his mind would be the money he would earn after his service. Oliveira proves Kwang Jingshus statement about new doctors true. He also proved to readers how selfish and greedy he truly is. During the surgery, the doctors did not realize that the patient was infected. However, after the surgery they were up for a surprise. The night after the surgery, Oliveira had gone out to enjoy himself, but deep down he knew something was not right. When he received a call from the clinic he was informed that Herr Muller had not awaken from the anesthesia and had gone into a coma. The doctor immediately left the place he was at and rushed to the clinic. When he got to the clinic he was told that the patient had bitten Dr. Silva. At first Oliveira took what he was told as a joke but then as he went inside the patients room, he faced reality. The doctor was faced with two options, he

"#$%&'()*! -! could either let the infected patient live or he could kill him. Oliveira decided to kill the patient so that he wouldnt spread the infection ever more. Oliveira then stated, I raised my pistol, aiming at his new heart. It was a Desert Eagle, Israeli, large and showy, which is why Id chosen it. Id never fired it before, thank God. I wasnt ready for the recoil. The round went wild, literally blowing his head off. Lucky, thats all, this lucky fool standing there with a smoking gun, and a stream of warm urine running down my leg, (Ch. 5). The fact that Oliveira took the easy way out by killing the patient instead of curing him proves again that Oliveira does not care about anyone else but himself. The fact that Oliveira transplants illegal organs from different parts of the world to his patients proves that the outbreak might have started there. The organs that were transplanted might have been infected and that is how the virus was eventually spread. Oliveira also had connections with the Brazilian police allowed him to keep on exchanging organs as well as allowing readers to realize the large amounts of government corruptibility and greed present.

Both characters, in a way, faced similar situations however, they both took different ways out. Jingshu decided to treat the infected patients and Oliveira decided to kill the patient. A better way of rewriting the sentence. This shows how their cultural backgrounds are extremely different. Jingshu tends to prioritize his patients and he would do this by giving patients phone calls and treating them when they needed him. Oliveira is more of a careless doctor because he only looks for what benefits himself instead of what benefits the patient. The narrator would say, The chairman of that council is Kwang Jingshu, a medical doctor who, despite his advanced age and wartime injuries, still manages to make house calls to all his patients, (Ch. 2). Jingshu shows that his patients always come first and that no matter what situation he is facing he will always put them first. This makes readers realize how much Jingshu is dedicated to his work. On

Escareno, .! the other hand, Fernando Oliveira is just a carless doctor that feels like he deserves everything. The fact that he went out the night of the surgery instead of taking care of his patient shows that he truly doesnt care. Even if Dr. Silva did give him the idea of going out that night, he could have easily not gone out. Oliveira stated, No, I didnt. I was trying to recover from a scandal, rebuild my reputation, my client base, my bank account. I wanted to forget what happened, not investigate it further. By the time I realized the danger, it was scratching at my front door, (Ch. 5). This proves once again that all Oliveira cares about is money and that he does not care that he is the one that is responsible for the outbreak due to the fact that he did not check to make sure if the organs that he had transplanted were infected. All the money in the world will not change how bad of a reputation Oliveira has as a doctor.

Furthermore, both Kwang Jingshu and Fernando Oliveira prove the importance two characters make to a novel. In the end, this allows readers to experience what the horror apocalyptic genre is really about. These characters are important to the novel because they contrast one other and provide uniqueness to the novel as a whole. Restated thesis however, there still needs to be more strength in this paragraph. Maybe restate why both characters contrasted one another.
