NFSC 471: Medical Nutrition Therapy II Skill Area: Medical Nutrition Therapy Assignment Title: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with Respiratory Failure Assignment Description: A partner and I were expected to complete a case study on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The patients information was provided and we were responsible for completing the entire nutrition care process. We presented our case study as experts, as if this patient had been ours. The presentation needed to be thirty minutes and include pathophysiology and the complete nutrition care process. What I learned: In this assignment, I learned about the multidisciplinary approach, the nutrition care process, pathophysiology, teamwork, power point skills, public speaking, and professional etiquette. Reflection: This assignment helped me gain an appreciation for my background in physiology, which was critical in understand COPD and respiratory failure. It was beneficial, learning the importance of each disease state and having a patient with multiple medical conditions. The process of interpreting relevant laboratory results, medications, and treatment plans was an important development. Relevance to the profession: Understanding the nutrition care process is critical in the nutrition field. Scientific based practice is important in developing the proper care for my patients. Being able to summarize and share my experiences with others in a professional setting will help others understand the importance of the nutrition. In addition to the valuable medical nutrition therapy, I also learned important presentation skills and increased experiences with PowerPoint. The presentation itself also increased my confidence in presenting accurate and knowledgeable information.
