Nick Schmid Instructional Technology Brian Bartel Using Google Maps I am sure many of your families use a GPS

when traveling somewhere you dont know how to get to. A GPS is an awesome tool to use to navigate but would any of you be able to find your way if you only had a map? Using maps has kind of been tossed aside with the emergence of GPSs and navigation apps on everyones smart phones, but we are going to learn about using maps a little bit today. Follow the following steps. 1) Go to the Google homepage and type in maps 2) Click on the first link, Google Maps It will take you to a map which is looking at where we are. You should see both Congress Avenue Athletic Park, and East Hall Park. 3) Most of you probably know this but REMEMBER, North is to the top of your screen, East is to the right, West is to the left, and South is towards the bottom. 4) You are able to zoom in and out with the plus and minus symbols on the line on the left side of the map. You also can click on the map and drag your screen around but be CAREFUL; getting lost is very easy to do. If you do not know where you are, zooming out can help, otherwise go back to the Google homepage and re-enter into Google Maps and it will put you back to where we are here in Oshkosh. 5) I would like each of you to write down directions if you were going to walk from Congress Avenue Park to East Hall Park. Use street names as well as directions (North, South, East, and West). There are a few ways that would work for a walking route; it should only take you a few different directional steps to get there. 6) We can also use Google Maps to get Directions for us. For this, we click the Get Directions button on the upper left area of the screen.

7) Type in Congress Avenue Athletic Park, Oshkosh, WI in the box to the right of the green letter A, and type, East Hall Park, Oshkosh, WI next to the green letter B. Right above these boxes there are different pictures for different ways to travel. They are: by car, by public transit, walking, and bicycling. For this trip we want to click on the walking box because we are walking from one park to another. What directions does it give us when we click the GET DIRECTIONS button? 8) Using the Get Directions option again, click on the by car button. How long does it take to get from Oshkosh, WI to Milwaukee, WI? ___________________ 9) How about from Oshkosh, WI to Miami, FL. How Long? _____________________ 10) Try: New York, NY to Anchorage, AK. How Long? ________________________ 11) Now, type in two different places of your choice. From: __________________________ To: ___________________________ How long does it take to get there? ____________ 12) How could you use Google Maps for a family trip?

13) Is there anything else you could use Google Maps for?

14) Once you are done, play around with Google Maps a little bit. Maybe try to find your house or somewhere you want to go someday. Ask me questions about how to do other things with Google Maps!

Here is an example of what your screen should look like during the first Google Maps instruction:
