Abramelin's Magickal Word Squares

Compiled and Corrected for the First Time

Aaron Leitch The following word-squares (or acrostics) have been complied from Boo !" of #eorge $ehn and %teven #uth&s 'nglish translation of the Book of Abramelin( These are the completed squares ta en from the #erman original(s)) rather than the corrupted and incomplete versions found in the *rench recension translated b+ %( L( ,athers( -owever) in this new translation) ,r( $ehn did not compile the magic al words into gridsquares( (According to his notes) the manuscripts he used for his translation contained the words written onl+ in line form() Therefore) ! have underta en the tas of inserting them into proper grids( .hat follows is the first time 'nglish spea ing students have seen the Abramelin word squares in their compiled (and corrected) form( As ! placed Abramelin&s words into their grids) ! discovered a large number of errors( (,ost of them apparentl+ from the original manuscript) and not the fault of ,r( $ehn or ,r( #uth/) %ome were apparent transcription errors- such as confounding c and e) f and s) or b and ( ! also found several places where ad0acent letters were transposed- similar to writing the word receive as recieve( %ome of the errors seemed une1plainable) unless the+ were deliberate blinds( Lending weight to that theor+) ! also found a few of the squares inverted) bac ward or mis-labeled( !n each case of correction) ! have also included $ehn&s te1t of the original square in a footnote( 2ut of 343 squares) ! have found appro1imatel+ 567 in need of correction- not counting several instances where labels were applied to the wrong squares( 2nl+ one square in the entire set was irreparable(

Methods of Correction
The easiest squares to correct were the simple Acrostics and the &8erfect& $ouble Acrostics- both of which contain repeated patterns throughout the square( !t was more difficult to 0udge the regular $ouble Acrostics) though ! have made m+ best attempts to correct them where necessar+( There were ver+ few cases where ! had to choose between one letter or another) or even fill in a missing letter( !n such cases ! would either go with intuition (usuall+ based on the overall pattern in the square)) and9or anal+:e the square linguisticall+ to discover an acceptable spelling( (The latter was often used to confirm or correct the former()

! also compared $ehn&s wor to the *rench recension each step along the wa+( ,athers& notes have been surprisingl+ useful (given the sorr+ state of the te1t he was using)- and ! have referenced each case where his notations aided me in correcting a square( As a side note; ! suspect the author of the *rench version was wor ing on these same corrections) but left the tas incomplete( .ith this document) the *rench author&s long-awaited goal is finall+ reali:ed(
