Natasha Rao Memo Plan: Use the Yahoo!

! memo as a basis and construct a new memo - using the same information and a different (more formal) structure. What is this memo's purpose? 1. Let people know who is affected by this layoff 2. When the process of laying people off is going to begin 3. Why this lay off is necessary Tools I need to use: Buffer type: Fairness: Assure the reader that you've closely examined and carefully considered the problem, or mention an appropriate action that has already been taken. Use the direct approach with less of a casual and straight forward "this is is" tone. Attempt to identify with the audience more by using the "You" attitude Bad News, Reasons, Positive Close

Outline: 1. WHAT: Layoff is happening WHO: Affecting 4% of the company mainly the Product Organization sector WHEN: Notifying now - effective after Thanksgiving 2. WHY: Duplication of products = waste of time and resources Investing in products that aren't selling = waste of resources By saving from these two cuts and the loss of those salary payments we are allowing ourselves to invest in what we need 3. This is sad but necessary. We need to focus on the future. Things I have changed in order to avoid copying the original yahoo memo: Used the due date of the paper as a reference in terms of deciding when lay offs and terminations were effective Changed the tone from that of a casual yet cold nature, to one of a professional and sympathetic nature. Included the idea that I am a part of the team and plan to act like it Made sure that all reasons for layoff, benefits of layoff, and benefits that those who are being released are clearly identified (using bullet points). I also used labels to give the audience an idea of structure
