ThroughoutthebookScoutbegantolearnmoreaboutblacksandhowtheylived.Shethought theywereshy,andtheydidnttalktomanywhitesbecauseoftheraceissues,butthatsurprisedher whenshewenttoCalpurniaschurch,FirstPurchase.Theystartedtowalkin,buttheystoppedaftera voicecaughtCalpurniasattention.

LulacameuptoCalpurniaandstartedtotalktoheraboutbring whitestoablackchurch.Thisconflictdrewinacrowdandallofasuddenpeoplestartedchippingin theirowncomments.CalpurniawasshockedLulawasyellingather.Shewassoscarednothingcame outofhermouth,butthensherememberedthatitwasherchurchjustasmuchasLulas.Calpurnia startedtotalkbackandthatwhenJemandScoutstartedtogetscared.Theydidntknowwhatwas goingtohappensotheystoodascloseastheycouldtoCal.ButonceReverendSykescomesoutand tellsLulatocalmdowntheyknewthattheyweresafeandfearwasreleased.Calpurniashowednofear whenshewasdefendingherselfandthekidsfromLulaandthatishowyouwineverybattle.

WhileScoutwasgrowingupmanythingsbotheredher.Shedidntlikeschool,shewantedto knowwhatBoolookedlike,andeverybodycalledherfamilynames.Shedidntletanyofthosenames gettoherthough.Shedefendedherfamilyandherself.WhenCecilJacobsstartscallingherfamilya blacklovingfamilyScoutshowsnofearandgoesafterCecil.Thetwofightitout,andScoutbeats himup.Shewasntscaredofwhatwasgoingtohappentoherifshegotintroubleaslongashe wouldntdoitagain.Also,atChristmastimeFrancisstartscallingAtticusnastynames.Scoutwasnt goingtofighthim,butsheknewhewasgoingtokeepdoingit.UncleJack,Atticusbrothercomes homeforChristmas.ScoutandhimhadatalkwhenhegotthereabouttheconsequencesScoutwould getinifshegotinanymoretrouble.Shedidntwantanypunishmentbutagainsheknewhewasgoing tokeepsayingthatterriblename.Shegotoverthefearofthepunishment,andshefoughthim.She punchedhimacoupletimesandthenshegotpulledoffhim.Scoutwasntscaredtofight,butshe wouldnthavetofightanybodyifnobodycalledAtticusnames. Atticustookalotofcriticismbecausehewasdefendingablackmanincourt.Atticusgotcalled manynamesandhisfamilyandchildrengotcalledmanynamesbecauseofwhathewasdoing.Back thenmanywhitepeopledidntliketheblackpeoplebutthiswasAtticusjob.HehadtodefendTom otherwisehewasgoingtogetfired.Beforethetrial,amobcomestoAtticusdoorandtellshimthat thereisgoingtobetroubleatTomsjailcellthatnight.JemandScoutareveryscaredofwhatisgoing tohappentoAtticusbecauseallthemobmemberslookliketheywanttokillhim.Laterthatnight AtticusgoestoTomsjailcellandsitstherewithhim.AdifferentmoblatershowsuptotakeTom away.ThemobwasgoingtodoanythingtogettoTombutAtticusshowednofear.Hestoodhis groundandthemoblaterleft.Whenthecarspulledaway,thefearinAtticus,Jem,andScoutsbodies wentaway.Duringthetrial,AtticusmakesBobEwelllooklikeafool.Mr.Ewellwasembarrassed.He

wassoembarrassedthathethreatenedtokillAtticusandTom.HespatinAtticusfaceandcalledhim namesthatIcantsayandlaterwalkedaway.Thekidsweredeathlyafraidofwhatwasgoingto happentoAtticus.Thethingthatreallyscaredthekidsisthattheydontknowwhatisgoingtohappen tohimsinceTomisdead.Hetellsthemnottoworryabouthimandthathehaseverythingunder control.Eventhoughhegotcallednastynames,hehadnofearindefendingwhatheloved. InthebookToKillAMockingbird,HarperLeeprovesthatifyouwanttosucceed,youhave tostandyourgroundwithnofear.Manypeopledefendedwhattheylovedandwhattheyknewwas right.Calpurniadefendedthechildren,Scoutdefendedherfamily,andAtticusdefendingTom Robinson.Andeventhoughtherewassomepunishmentcomingwithit,neitherofthemhadfearwhen theystoodtheirgroundforwhattheyknewwhatwasright.
