Round Rock tops Bowie in volleyball playoffs

By Butch Hart, American-Statesman Correspondent Stephanie Aiple notched 37 assists and Lauren Taft pounded 12 kills as state-ranked Round Rock swept visiting Bowie 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 in Class 5A bi-district volleyball playoff action Monday night. Aiple, a preseason all-state selection, finished with four kills, three blocks and a service ace; Ali Davison contributed eight kills; and Madison King marked her return from a stress fracture in her foot with four kills and a block in limited playing time. Karley Prine had four service aces for the Dragons, and Paige Varga added seven kills for the winners. We played pretty well defensively, but we did not have a crisp offense tonight, said coach Diane Watson, whose Dragons are 35-7. Kellen Dunn led Bowie (21-21) with seven kills, and Shelby Johnson had 14 assists for the Bulldogs. Round Rock will play the winner of the Klein Oak-A&M Consolidated bi-district match. State and nationally top-ranked The Woodlands (38-0) is in the bottom half of the Region 2 bracket and could meet Round Rock in the regional finals.
