Blood and red blood cells

Composition of blood : Blood has four key componentsPlasma Fluid : part of blood carries carbon dioxide, hormones and waste. Mostly composed of water, contains other components such as proteins, salts, lipids and glucose. ed blood cells: !ontain haemoglobin which carries oxygen made in the bone marrow. "he more you train the more red blood cells are made. #hite blood cells: $n important part of the immune system, they produce antibodies and destroy harmful microorganisms made in the bone marrow Platelets: !lump together to form clots Protect the body by stopping bleeding

Plasma and the transport Of Substances:

Plasma retrie%es the materials necessary for the body&s sur%i%al from such organs as the li%er and the small intestine. "hese materials, deli%ered to the cells, are usually the results of digestion: amino acids, glucose, mineral salts, %itamins, lipids, hormones and ions. Plasma is also essential to the body&s defence, as it contains antibodies, antitoxins, and fibrin, a clotting agent that works with the platelets to heal wounds.

Adaption of red blood cells:

"he shape of it is biconca%e 'and like a flattened disc(. "his increases surface area o%er %olume. )t has no nucleus, so that there is more space for more haemoglobin to be packed. )t contains haemoglobin, which is a molecule which binds re%ersibly to oxygen. )t is flexible and elastic - so that it can s*uee+e through the capillaries. "hin wall: for easy diffusion of ,xygen and !arbon dioxide in and out of the cells. "hin cell: pro%iding a short distance for diffusion and increasing efficiency.
