Timothy Porras RAP 7 1.

Navarro- Becoming La Mujer Main Idea: The narrator is saying that growing up in East Los Angeles is difficult because of the racial profiling of people with darker skin. She was also a woman and she explains how much harder her life was because she is automatically judged for being good looking by being called a slut. Question: Why are people so quick to judge and put stereotypes on people without even getting to know the persons story first? Connection: I have heard and seen people put stereotypes on people that may be of another gender or if they have different colored skin. It has happened to me, because of my last name, Porras, people just think I was born in Mexico and celebrate many Mexican traditions, but I do not even speak Spanish and they put labels on me just from my last name. 2. Rivero- Beautiful Betty Main Idea: This excerpt is about the show Ugly Betty and how the main character was labeled as fat, ugly, and classless. It shows many of the struggles that women experience in life today. Question: Why are there not a lot of shows like Ugly Betty that dig deep and tackle the issues of todays society? Connection: I used to watch Ugly Betty when it was first showed, it was actually one of my favorite shows, but I was too young to understand the deeper concept of the show. I am glad that I know now what the show tried to point out.

3. Jacob- My Brown Face Main Idea: This is about a woman who gets a lot of unwanted attention just based on the color of her skin. She encounters a lot of men that talk to her as if she is a slut, but when she talks back or ignores them, she becomes the bitch. She tells her mom about it but she seems very unconcerned and says that it is just how life is. Question: Why are women judged, no matter what they do, like in the story? Connection: I have seen this a lot, even with a couple of friends that I have been with. All they do is judge women or hit on women, but when they get rejected, they become hated.

Timothy Porras RAP 7 Henry, S. (2007) Racial Profiling in the Media: Investigated through a Ritualistic Lens. Retrieved from University of Colorado at Boulder http://www.colorado.edu/communication/meta-discourses/Papers/App_Papers/Henry.htm Summary: The article talks about how profiling in the media, such as the news, is creating bad images for a great majority of people that are not white. Latinos or African Americans seem to be the only people in the media that are being arrested in the news. In TV shows, people with different colors of skin that are not white, are portrayed as criminals and are nothing more than degenerates. Assess: This is a well written article, it explains why society believes that people with darker skin colors are seen as the criminals. It also explains that this is not the case, and the media just promotes moders racism.
