Key Summary For our English 2 final assignment, we have to form a group ourselves and done a research project about a trading business. My group had decided to do a research on three different mini markets which located at Sungai uloh, !lang and !ajang. "lso, the prices of the products from three of those mini markets are different either, some are considered as e$pensive whereas some are considered as reasonable. y doing this research report, we can get to know more about how a mini market business is ran. free during weekends compare to weekdays as everyone of us has different timetable. )e all agree to meet up at / in the morning in front of the library before leaving the campus. efore we start interviewing with the owners of each of the mini markets, we will first introduce ourselves by telling them we are the students from #aylor0s 1niversity and let them know the main purpose of doing the interview is because it is a part of our assignment. "fter getting the permissions from them, only we start the interview by asking them some 2uestions which we have prepared earlier, for instance asking them the founded years of the mini market and so forth. efore we really start doing this group assignment, there will sure be a lot of group meetings in order for us to discuss about the work that has to be done for this assignment. #his assignment is a research project, we have to choose a type of businesses and do a research on it. #hrough meetings, we will be discussing about what type of businesses we want to do a research on and also the location. Every group work re2uire a good leader to run the show. 5uring the meetings, the leader will manage works for each of us to do for this assignment. The Mini Market Mini market is the trading business that we had chosen for this research essay. Mini market refers to a small supermarket which re2uires not big volumetric space as

the supermarket. %t usually sells groceries or some daily use product such as rice grain, toothbrush, mops, and more but still their selection of item still limited compare to supermarket. First, before one decided to open a mini market, he or she need to pick a speciali9ation which also known as a niche. %nstead, offer few potential customers products not commonly sold in supermarkets. &e$t, find a location that is near resident0s area or a place where customers can come in to you easily. #hen, they need to try to market their mini market as well to attract the customers. 6ther than that, they need to get opinion from the customer as well to know what their basic need or the brand that customer actually used for daily needs item. %t can help to reduce the cost for importing something that cannot be sold and attract more customers to your store as they came to your shop to buy the stuff they need instead of going to supermarket which located far away from them. Mini market trading business started to introduce in Malaysia during 2-th century, which before that is grocery stores. More people started their mini market business instead of the grocery store because the increase of choices of sales item. #he advantages of a mini market is that it is actually located nearer to the housing area where the customers do not need to went to a further place such as supermarket to buy their daily uses. 6ther than that, their pricing is actually not much difference from the supermarket.

6ne of the mini markets we interview is Mini Market *oo Seng which located in Sungai uloh. #here were actually 2 branches which located at the Sungai uloh but

different area. #here were also had : workers work separately in the two branches. #his business is probably selling groceries and daily uses products. #here were around +-customers per day visit their mini market which included housewives, foreign worker and children. #his business was actually started in +/:; and it was found by #eh !am 7ing. "t first it runs a groceries shop at !uala Selangor, then he open a mini market store during the year of +/<< in Sungai after he open the new branch in Sungai uloh. =e closes the shops in !uala Selangor uloh. 5uring the +//-, he passes his shares

to 4an !uang >ao, a loyal worker which works with him since +/<<. #he business was now running by 4an !uang >ao since +//- and he open another branch at Sungai uloh but different area at the year of 2-+-. #he business had improves and now upgraded into *oo Seng Enterprise. mini market business but he had the talent. 5uring the +/<<, 4an !uang >ao started working with him and #eh !am 7ing started to teach him how to run this business. =e teaches him how to communicate with the customers, how to promote the product to the customers and how to improve the 2uality of the product sales by make sure every items that the store order were not wrong calculated and the spoiled had to return back to the supplier. 4an !uang >ao also learns few strategies from him where it helps him to improve the business development and compete with the other mini markets. 5uring the time between the years +//- to 2-+., 4an !uang >ao had done a lot of research about how to improve the business of the mini market. 5uring the past : years, he works together with his sons as his sons had learn the knowledge of running a business, they open the new branch in the year 2-+-. %t was a mini market store which consists of two shop lots. #he new branch needs a capital around +--,--- to 2--,--- to run this business. #heir business right now improves day by day and they also deciding to open another branches at a different places at the future. &ow, the two shops were run by his two sons.

business for +- years started from 2--.. #here are 2 employees in the shop. #hey sold groceries, daily products and vegetables. #hey also sell cooking gas to the resident. #hey indeed provide services such as delivery of the cooking gas to houses which locates in andar ukit #inggi. #here are around +-- customers will visit his shop a day and basically is in the morning as there is a morning market locates nearby. %t was found by 'enusha, a housewife from a %ndian family. "fter she had collect enough capital, she get helps from her relatives and family to start run this business. She gets the knowledge of running business from her relatives. 6ne of the convenience shops that we have interviewed is @asar Mini Senang. %t is located in a residence area in Sungai 3hua, !ajang. First of all, Mr 7im #iam Siong is the key founder of this convenience shop. Mini Market Senang is started in year +//< and until now 2-+. is already +, years. A#he reason why % started this business is % want to achieve my dream of being a boss,B said Mr 7im. efore he started this business, he worked at a 3hinese medicine shop for +: years. #his is because he wanted to get more e$perience so that he could start this business successfully.

Most of the consumers are from the housing area. #he products that provided are mostly depends on consumer0s needs. #he +,CyearCold convenience shop has over :-- products so that every customer can fulfill their needs. =e also told us that he got a very high return for the past few years. =owever, for these few years, the annual revenue has getting much more lower because there are more competitors such as // Speedmart, !! Mart and MD5%& have borned. #herefore, the only strategy that he could do is providing more services than other convenience shop. : years ago, the strategy of combining herbal shop and convenience shop has finally started. #his strategy has attracted more 3hinese customers because the price of the 3hinese medicines is cheaper compare to othe shops. Mr 7im told us that the business has getting much better after he started this strategy.

3omparative "nalysis of the usinesses0 3ompetitive #raits First, % would like to do some similarities on the three mini markets that we are doing for the research. asically, the three mini markets are doing small

businesses that are also having the same purpose, which is provide services to the customers. #he three mini markets are all located at resident area. "mong their customers, they are the residents around the mini markets. #hey have all races of customers. 6f course, their customers0 backgrounds are all different. #heir main products are mostly groceries and depend on customers0 need. #hey have competitors which are // Speed Mart , Mydin and !! Mart. %n economics, their prices of their products are depending on it. =owever, their pricing decisions for the product strongly affected by the competitors. #here have neither advertisement to advertise their shops nor promotions doing to attract customers. #he problems that they are facing are also the same, which are more shopping malls built around that area that attract all the customers and affect their businesses. %t is difficult to overcome because shopping mall provides discount and promotion. #he Environment of the shopping malls is more attractive and comfortable than their mini markets. %n the differences, among the three mini markets, they have different restock timing. For Mini Market Senang, they are not having any branch offices or stores currently but still in planning to have at least one branch offices or stores.

Mini Market *oo Seng #hey actually need to provide some promotions to the customers such as buy two free one or giving discounts to specify product. %t can help to increase the customers and attract more customers to the store. "dditionally, there are more supermarket build around that area such as #esco and Eiant. So, with providing promotion and discounts, they will rather go to mini market instead of going the supermarket because the location of the supermarket which locate 2uite a long distance from their housing area. esides, they can also provide services such as ordering and delivery services to the customers as it was just nearby. "lthough there are few charges on the transportation, but most of the customers will rather chose the delivery service than going the shop themselves because it is a rural area and more foreign worker appear there causes the place become very dangerous. . Mini Market Sap #hey can actually e$pand their shop lots so they can import more selection of sales item to sale to the customers. 3ustomers tend to go to shops where there was more selection of items. esides, some customers tend to buy stuff with the specify brand as they more preferable to use that brand of items. Mini Market Senang Mini Market Senang is located in a residence area. #hey have very high annual revenue each year. #herefore, they should e$pand the business to different state.
