JustinKaltved Ms.Boes English10 #1 TheyarealwaysscaredofBoobuttheyarealwaysgoingbackandalways wonderingbuttheyarescared.InthestoryallthechildrenarescaredofBoobuteven thoughtheyarescaredofhimtheycontinuetotalkabouthimandgotohishouse.Boowas oncelockedinhishousebecausehelockedtheSheriffintoanouthousewhenhewas breakingthelawdrinkinganddancing.ThetownofMaycombwassosmallthateverybody kneweverybody,byfirstname.Sothesherifftookeveryboythathelpedtolockhiminto theouthousetocourt,whenalltheotherboysweresentawaytogototheschoolMr.radley decidedhewouldkeepArthurathomeandnotlethimhaveasociallifetoseehisfriends andbeakid.Mr.Radleydecidedthatifsocietywasgoingtotrytocorrupthissonhewould cuthissonfromsociety.Whenboofinallygotsickofbeingwithhisfamilyandneverseeing theoutsideworld,hegotfedup.

themandstartedbeingalittlesexistwhentheywouldntlethergobecausemaybeshe wouldjustbeatagalongandbeinthewayofthemmeetingboo,orshewouldbean easiertargetforBooifhewantedsomeonetohurt.Wecanseethelackoffearinthese childrenwhentheytrytoputthenoteinsidehishouse,ringthedoorbellandalsogowindow peeping.TheyarentscaredofBoo,butnow,thattheyknowMr.Radleyinfacthasagun, theyshouldbescaredofhim.Heisabletouseit,anditisntfrighteningtothem. #4 Scoutsaysthattheworldisgoingtoendwhenshelooksoutthewindowandseessnow. Sheautomaticallyassumestheworstandthinksthattheworldisgoingtoendbecauseshe hasneverseensnow.Itwasafalsefear,shehadnothingtofear.Fearisapparentwhen Jemwentbacktogethispantsfromthefencewhentheyweretoreoff.Hefeareditalittle bitbecausehispantswerentwherehelefttheminthefence.Theyalsowerentripped fromthefence.Someonehadfoldedthejeansoverthefenceandsomeonehadsewnthe pants.Thisscaresthekidsbecausetheyrenotsurewhodidthis.Anexampleofalackof feariswhentheyfoundoutthatBooputtheblanketaroundScoutsshoulders.Shewasnt scaredatallbecauseshewasntaware.Youcouldbeinascaryplace,butifyoudont knowwhatsgoingonitsnotscary.DespitebeingterrifiedofBoosheknewitwashimthat putitaroundhershoulders.ThismayhavechangedheropinionofBoo. #5 Scoutisntscaredtostandupforwhattheybelieveinnow,wheneversomeoneiscalling theirdadaniggerlover,soshefightsandarguesoverit.Atticusgetsveryupsetthathis childrencontinuetofightbuthedoesntreallyhandlethesituationtoowell.Hejustkindof letsitgo,asifitsabigdealbuthedoesntwanttohandleit.Thenscoutgetstoldthatno matterwhatpeoplesayaboutherdaddythatsheneedstojustletitgoandnotletitbugher becauseitisntaffectingher.Butscoutdoesntlistenassheneverdoesandshewent aheadandgotinanotherfightwithhercousinfrancis.Jemcuttheflowersoffofthebushes inMrs.Duboseyardandhethrewthemonherlawn.AtticuswalksbyMrs.Dubosehouse andseestheflowersonherlawn.HeknowsthatJemdiditandtellsJemhehastoreadto Mrs.Dubosefortwohourseverydayfortwomonths.Jemdoesntwanttoreadtoher,he thinksthatMrs.Duboseisamean,oldlady.But,Jemknowsthathehastoreadtoher.So, heshowsupafterschoolandgoesinthehouse.ScoutandJembotharealittlescaredof thehouseMrs.Duboselivesin.Theysaythehouseisdarkandcreepy.Theyareeven morescaredwhenMrs.Duboseasksthemtositclosertoher.Mrs.Duboseisnteven listeningandJemknowsit.So,itcreepshimoutthatshewantedhimtositclosertoher. ScoutandJemwerentscaredofMrs.Dubose,buttheywerescaredbytheatmospherein herhouse. #6 FearisshownwhenJemandScoutgotochurchwithCalpurnia.Luluwasbeingmean aboutwhitekidsshowingupatthechurchandsheyelledatJemandScoutalongwith Calpurniaforbringthemtoablackchurch.Lulasaysthatthewhitepeoplehavetheirown churchandtheblackpeoplehavetheirchurch.Shethinksitswrongtheyreattheblack churchandsheshowsitbyscaringthekids.Calpurniadefendedthekidsandeveryone elsewasnicetothem,eventuallyLulaleftandthekidswerefine.Fearisalsoshownwhen ReverendSykeshadsomeoneclosethedoortothechurch.Hedidthisbecausethey neededmoremoneytogetatotaloftendollarsforMrs.Robinson.Thechurchwasveryhot

duetothelackofairflow.Thisscaredthekidsbecausetheydidntknowhowlongthey weregoingtohavetobeinthewarmchurch.FearisshownagainwhenDillisunderthe bed.ImmediatelyaftersteppingonhimScoutthinksitsasnake.Thisisafalsefear becauselateritisfoundoutthatitwasjustDillunderherbed.Peoplealwaysthinkforthe worst. #7 FearreallystandsoutinthechildreninthischapterIthink,whenthephoneatthehouse ringswhenallthemenarewarningAtticusthattheyaremovingTomRobinsonbackinto theMaycombcountyjail,Jemscreamsthephoneisringingtogethisdadbackinside becausehedoesntwantanythingtohappentohisdad.Scoutiswonderingsomany questionsduringthetrialbecauseshedoesntknowwhatishappeningorwhatisgoingon butshewantstofindout,shedoesntgetitbecausesheisonlyeightyearsold.Ialsothink fearshowsinAtticusalittleinthesechapters,hesaysittookan8yearoldtocalman angrymobthatcouldhavekilledagrownman,maybetwo.andhejustkindofletsitgowith that.Hereassuresthechildrenthatitllbeokayandthisisgoingtoworkoutforthebetter. Atticusalsoshowslackoffearandalotofconfidencewhenherepeatshisquestionsto getaclearanswerfromthewitness. #8 Fearcomesandgoes,allthetime.DillstartedcryingduringthecasesoScouthadtotake himoutside.WhenscouttookhimoutsidetheysawDolphusraymondsittingunderatree drinkingoutofapapersacklikehealwaysdid.Scoutwhisperedtodillthatheshouldstay awayfromhimbecauseshewasscaredofhim.TheythoughtthatDolphuswasdrunksince hewasalwaysdrinkingoutofhispapersack.HestartedtalkingtoDillandScout.DIllwas stillcryingduringthat.DolphuswasofferingDilladrinkofwhatwasinhispapersack,he saiditwouldmakehimfeelbetter.DilltookadrinkandsaiditwasCocaColaandDilland scoutwereshockedthattheyfoundouthewasntreallyadrunkafterall.Thefeartheyhad inhimhadvanished.MayellafearedthatAtticuswasmakingfunofherwhenAtticuscalled hermiss.MayelladidntknowthatAtticuswasjustbeingpolite.Sheautomaticallyassumed thatAtticuswasmakingfunofher. #9 Calwascryingbecauseshedidnotwantthechildrentoattendthecourtcaseandtheydid nottellher.AlsoAuntAlexandrawasupsetwiththechildrenbecauseshethoughttheyhad beenlostandsheknewthatpeopleweremadatAtticussomaybetheyweremadatthe childrentooandwouldtrytohurtthem,soAuntywasupsetbecauseshehadnoideawhere theywere.Thisalsoshowsthatjemhasgrownupalittle,hestartscryinginthesechapters becauseheisfrustratedbecauseheknewthatTomcouldnthavebeatthegirlyetthey wereswearingthathehadtohave.Also,thereislittlefearshownbyatticuswhenBob Ewellthreatenstokillhim.atticuskindofblowsitofftoactlikeitisnothinganditisn't affectinghimwheninrealityitisandheshouldhavebeenworriedaboutit.Finallyinthese chapters,fearishiddenbythecharacterswhentheyallstarttocalmdownandcopewith thefactthatTomdidnothurtthegirl.Itwasnthim,anditcouldntpossiblybehim. #10 Inthesechaptersthewomenaretheonesdoingthedirtyworktheyaretalkingbadabout otherpeoplehidingthefactthattheydontwantpeopletoknowthattheyaremadatthem. Onthewalkbackhome,Jem hearsnoisesbehindhimandScout.TheythinkitmustbeCecilJacobstryingtofrighten themagain,butwhentheycallouttohim,theyhearnoreply.Theyhavealmostreachedthe roadwhentheirpursuerbeginsrunningafterthem.Thishastoscarethem.Itscaresthem evenmorewhenScoutwasnearlystabbed.But,shehadchickenwirewrappedaroundher fromthehamcostumefromtheplay.ThiswasverycloseforScout.But,Boosavedthe kidsandthekidsreturnedhomesafely. #12 IdontthinktherewasverymuchfearinthechildreninthesechaptersbecauseEwellwas deadandtheyhadAtticusandMr.Tatewiththem.Ithinkmostofthefearcamefrom Atticus.HedidntshowitverymuchbutImjustguessingthathewasfearfulofhiskids lives.Mr.TateandAtticuslistentoScouttellhersideofthestoryastohowithappened. AtticusbelievesthatJemstabbedBobEwellinselfdefense.Mr.TatekepttellingAtticus thatJemdidntdoit.Mr.TatekeepssayingthatEwelltrippedandfellontheknife,killing himself.Allthistime,Booisleaningagainstawallinthecorner.ItisobviousthatMr.Tate knowsthatBookilledEwellandthatheisjusttryingtocoveritupbecausehedoesntwant Bootohavetodealwithgoingtocourtandstuff.ScoutwalksBoohomeandsherealizes thatBoosviewofeverythingthathasbeengoingoninthebookisdrasticallydifferentthan shethoughtitwas.
