Course Competency 10:

Evaluate program integration of WI Early Learning Standards into the teaching cycle of ongoing assessment, Planning and curriculum goals, and Implementation

The first step in the teaching cycle is implementation by providing meaningful experiential activities that support individual and group goals guided by supportive interaction and relationship. The second step is providing ongoing observation and assessments of the children to determine their current interest and document their development. The third step in the teaching cycle is in planning and curriculum goals where I decide what should be done to promote development and what it is I want the children to learn. Procedures need to be in place for implementing the teaching and learning cycle in my program. The method needs to become a habit that feels natural and automatic. When I observe or hear something that I feel is in need of a response (a developmental milestone, a conversation that reveals a new interest or concern or a child struggling with an activity or a relationship) it needs to be documented. My system for documentation needs to be simple enough to allow it to happen immediately and consistently. I need to know what comes next developmentally, so I can respond appropriately. Lesson planning and goal setting should use multiple sources. The information I document needs to be used to develop goals, reflect on a childs progress of a current goal or respond to a childs interest. Goals need to be challenging yet achievable and plans should include all areas of development and consider the cultural context of my families. Strategies should be adjusted in response to what I observe. My role as a teacher implementing a plan includes many things. I should support childrens emerging understandings by scaffolding learning and adapting for all children. I should engage in meaningful conversations in front of the children to support language development. I need to be flexible in my program and adjust plans as needed. Learning should be visible to the children. I need to perform assessments and use information to provide feedback; re-plan and re-teach, or repeat as needed. I should refer children and families when appropriate for additional assessment, support and services that may be needed.
