Neurotransmitter: A chemical substance which is released at the end of a nerve fibre (synapse) by the arrival of a nerve impulse (action

potential) and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, effects the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fibre. E.g. acetylcholine. How were they discovered: They were discovered via a series of experiments that were centred around the frogs nervous system. Before the experiments actually took place there was a lot of debate ion the scientific community about what was in the vesicles themselves as they could clearly see the organelles via the electron microscope w=but what they couldnt see was the actual substance inside, so in the 1960s a set of rules were devised about what was a neurotransmitter.
