Tyree 2 December 2013 Proctor the Tragic Hero Arthur Miller who wrote The Crucible writes about a character by the name of John Proctor, who is strong, honest, and has a dark secret. John Proctor is known as being the tragic hero of The Crucible. The reason why John Proctor is known as the tragic hero is because he had a bad secret that would always haunt him. In the end he chose to confess his secret for the sack of the others in the town. He is a very honorable man for doing what he did. Why is John Proctor called the tragic hero of the story? He is named the tragic hero because he had the courage to confess his mistake so that all the horror would come to an end. John Proctor is well known, respected and is very well involved in the community. Then let you come out and call them wrong. Did you consult the wardens before you called the minister to look for devils (Act 1 pg.147). Proctor is wanting to ask the wardens first before the minister comes in and makes a hug deal about it when it might be nothing. John is like this because he is a very stern and sharp man. You cannot command Mr. Parris. We vote by name in this society, not by acreage. (Act1 pg.148). He tries not to have the ministers come in to the situation and I believe there is a reason for that. I believe that John doesnt want the ministers to be involved in it is because the church barely talk about god much never the less Satan. John Proctor is a good man but we soon learn more about a tragic flaw about him. John Proctor has a downfall when he committed the sin of lechery. Give me a word, a soft word. (Act 1 pg.145). Abigail is still madly in love with Mr. Proctor. Shes flirting with him to soften him up to her. Abby, I never give you hope to wait for me. (Act 1 pg.145). John

Garcia 2 is trying to tell her that he wants nothing to do with her anymore. He pretty much is trying to let her know that she should stop. With this doing it caused a lot of corruption and chaos because Abigail is hurt. Proctors legacy is when he confesses to the sin he had committed with Abigail. I have known her, sir. I have known her, sir. I have known her (Act 3 pg.189). Proctor confronts himself to the court and tells them that he has done wrong. He says that he has committed lechery with Abigail Williams. In the proper place where my beasts are bedded. On the last night of my joy, some eighth months past. My wife, my dear good wife, took this girl soon after, and put her out on the highroad. (Act3 pg.189). He tells the jury how it happened and explained himself with apologies. He tells them that his wife is innocent and had nothing to do with all the mischief. John has come to redemption by confessing the truth because if none of this had happened none of the trails would have happened in the first place. John Proctor is a regular person who sins just like you and I but just so happens that in this story sin was taken seriously and went to dramatic matters that ended up cause mishap towards the entire town. He chooses to confess his sin of lechery and ends up becoming the tragic hero for thinking of those before himself. The lesson we can learn from this is that you shouldnt do something without realizing what kind of consequences there would be.
