As a new enlistee you are a private and then you ascend as a Private 2, Private First Class, Specialist, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, and then Sergeant Major of the Army. Lionel was a E-5 Sergeant which meant the following applied; typically commanded a group of nine or ten men. Was considered to have the greatest impact on Soldiers as they are directly involved with their daily lives. They were required to set an example for new privates and other lowly advanced men. The 92nd Division was established in October of 1917. It was nicknamed the Buffalo Soldiers Division and its patch thus resembled a bison. The WW1 Victory Medal was awarded for my veterans service during the war. The Aisne-Marne battle clasp was given for participation in the 1918 battle in Marne, France. Last of his medals; the silver citation star was given for his overall outstanding performance as a sergeant. This medal was later renamed the Silver Star Medal and is now almost treated synonymously with the Army Commendation Award.
