HomesteadStrike Summary:Themostdramaticslaborbattleinthe19thcenturyintheU.S.Ittookplacein1892in HomesteadSteelWorks,PennsylvaniaownedbyAndrewCarnegie.Thefactorylockedoutunion workerswhoresistedwagecuts.About300PinkertondetectivesfoughtagainsttheworkersonJuly6, 1892.Dozensofpeoplewerekilledandmanyotherswerewoundedbythedetectives.8,000member statemilitiawereorderedbythegovernorofPennsylvaniatocombattheworkers.Thestrikethen endedandtheworkerswerefiredfromthefactory.Theunionwasdestroyedandittookthenations steelworkersdecadestorecoverfromthestrike.
