2012.02.09 16:15:55 FulwahB: Yes. That would be great

2012.02.09 16:17:37 EidA: great

2012.02.09 17:02:10 DavidW: Not sure where he hails from

2012.02.09 17:02:13 SandraS: Eid and Fulwah, we usually begin by introducing ourselves.

2012.02.09 17:02:18 DavidW: but he did have an accent

2012.02.09 17:02:18 BjB . o O ( leave it to David to find them, too! )

2012.02.09 17:02:30 SandraS: We usually say where we are located and what we teach or study.

2012.02.09 17:02:35 FulwahB: That sounds great!

2012.02.09 17:02:50 DavidW: Well, I was trying to buy some potatoes and these two men were
standing in the way - I simply said, "Gentlemen!"

2012.02.09 17:02:51 SandraS: I am in northern Alabama where I teach literature and writing at a
community college.

2012.02.09 17:02:57 DavidW . o O ( then I heard the accent )

2012.02.09 17:02:59 BjB: I'm a retired art teacher located in Pennsylvania. I'm also on the

14

2012.02.09 17:03:00 SandraS chuckles at David

2012.02.09 17:03:21 DavidW mostly wanders around New York City meeting people and
occasionally doing some work with math teachers - helping them learn to better use technology

2012.02.09 17:04:12 EidA: I'm Ed Tech graduated student

2012.02.09 17:04:43 BjB . o O ( I've reminded Eid and Fulway about detaching and urls )

2012.02.09 17:04:50 BjB . o O ( Fulwah )

15

2012.02.09 17:05:43 SandraS: Excellent!

2012.02.09 17:06:02 SandraS: I begin with an introduction to the National Writing Project, or
NWP.

2012.02.09 17:06:10 SandraS: Then I'll show you some resources on the website.

2012.02.09 17:06:30 SandraS: And we can discuss the resources and any other concerns or ideas
you have about the use of technology and writing.

2012.02.09 17:06:45 SandraS: Has either of you heard of the National Writing Project?

2012.02.09 17:06:47 FulwahB: OK.

2012.02.09 17:07:03 FulwahB: I haven't

2012.02.09 17:07:12 EidA: I havn't either

2012.02.09 17:07:28 SandraS: Here's a quick description:

2012.02.09 17:07:41 SandraS: The National Writing Project, a federally-funded, professional

development group founded in 1974, believes in three basic tenets: 1) teachers are the best

16

teachers of other teachers, 2) teachers teach writing more effectively if they improve their own
writing, and 3) writing provides a powerful tool for learning in all subject areas.

2012.02.09 17:08:17 SandraS: The NWP started in California at UC Berkeley

2012.02.09 17:08:33 SandraS: And it grew to about 200 different sites in the U.S.

2012.02.09 17:08:44 SandraS: All NWP sites are located at universities

2012.02.09 17:08:52 SandraS: and K-16 teachers participate.

2012.02.09 17:09:01 SandraS: The main project at each site is a summer institute

2012.02.09 17:09:12 SandraS: This is an intensive professional development institute

2012.02.09 17:09:19 SandraS: Any questions so far?

2012.02.09 17:10:13 EidA: no thanks

2012.02.09 17:10:34 SandraS: So for almost four decades, the NWP has been working on how to
improve the teaching of writing.

2012.02.09 17:10:52 SandraS: Unfortunately, the federal government did not fund the NWP last

17

year.

2012.02.09 17:11:08 SandraS: But the NWP is still doing its excellent work in a smaller
capacity.

2012.02.09 17:11:32 SandraS: NWP has also been in the forefront of using technology to aid in
the instruction of writing.

2012.02.09 17:11:42 SandraS: That's probably the most important aspect for both of you.

2012.02.09 17:12:03 FulwahB left the room (signed off).

Room: WriteTalk_Grp

2012.02.09 17:15:59 FulwahB joined the room.

2012.02.09 17:16:03 SandraS: When Fulwah gets back, we'll look at the different sites.

2012.02.09 17:16:11 BjB cheers. Welcome back, Fulwah!

2012.02.09 17:16:12 SandraS: Ah - Fulwah is back!

18

2012.02.09 17:16:13 DavidW: welcome back, Fulwah

2012.02.09 17:16:33 SandraS: No problem.

2012.02.09 17:17:04 SandraS: We were just discussing the funding of the NWP.

2012.02.09 17:17:08 BjB: we were waiting for you to return, Fulwah...we all get disconnects
from time to time

2012.02.09 17:17:14 FulwahB: the Modem stopped working well

2012.02.09 17:17:43 SandraS: Let's go ahead and visit the site.

2012.02.09 17:17:52 EidA: ok

2012.02.09 17:17:55 FulwahB: Thank you very much for waiting

2012.02.09 17:18:02 FulwahB: Ok

19

2012.02.09 17:18:07 SandraS: When I give you the URL, I'd like you to go to the site and then
look at the map in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

2012.02.09 17:18:18 SandraS: You can click on the map and find the NWP site closest to you.

2012.02.09 17:18:23 FulwahB: Good

2012.02.09 17:18:37 EidA: okay

2012.02.09 17:18:44 SandraS: Once you do that, if you will then use the Search box -- also in the
upper right-hand corner.

2012.02.09 17:18:53 SandraS: And type in anything that you're interested in --

2012.02.09 17:19:00 SandraS: especially if it has to do with technology.

2012.02.09 17:19:11 SandraS: See what the site gives you and check it out for a little bit.

2012.02.09 17:19:21 SandraS: Then come back here and we'll discuss what you find.

2012.02.09 17:19:30 FulwahB: Okay

2012.02.09 17:19:39 SandraS: BJ has already reminded you to press the CTRL key when you

20

click on the link.

2012.02.09 17:19:47 SandraS: Here's the link:

2012.02.09 17:27:16 BjB: Sandy will be right back...

2012.02.09 17:27:20 BjB: better?

2012.02.09 17:27:21 SandraS: Sorry!

2012.02.09 17:27:27 BjB sighs with relief

2012.02.09 17:27:30 SandraS: Just took a side trip to reception.

2012.02.09 17:30:16 SandraS: The good thing about TappedIn is that you will have a transcript
emailed to you, so you'll have the URLs in the transcript. You can go back to the site and spend
more time exploring.

2012.02.09 17:30:34 SandraS nods to BJ

2012.02.09 17:30:46 EidA: great

2012.02.09 17:30:50 FulwahB: Really. That would be great if I could join it

2012.02.09 17:31:16 BjB: any Tapped In member can join the OTL group, Fulwah

2012.02.09 17:31:37 FulwahB: Yes. That's verry nice so that we can keep what we disscussed

23

2012.02.09 17:31:49 SandraS: OK, so why don't you tell me about some of the educational
technology you're most interested in.

2012.02.09 17:31:52 SandraS nods to Fulwah

2012.02.09 17:32:25 SandraS: You'll have a complete record of this discussion.

2012.02.09 17:32:45 SandraS: Have you worked with blogs, wikis, podcasts?

2012.02.09 17:32:50 FulwahB: For me, I love the idea of using Moodle as a very useful tool.

2012.02.09 17:32:55 SandraS nods

2012.02.09 17:33:03 EidA: yes I have

2012.02.09 17:33:05 SandraS: Great collaborative tool

2012.02.09 17:33:21 SandraS: What is your favorite piece of educational technology

2012.02.09 17:33:23 SandraS: ?

2012.02.09 17:33:25 FulwahB: I haven't used blog yet.

24

2012.02.09 17:33:48 SandraS: Here is the wiki I use for my courses:

2012.02.09 17:33:57 SandraS: http://wordweaver.pbworks.com

2012.02.09 17:33:59 EidA: you mean app ?

2012.02.09 17:34:04 SandraS: And here is the blog I use for my classes:

2012.02.09 17:34:10 SandraS: http://drshattuck.wordpress.com

2012.02.09 17:34:17 SandraS: Yes -- application or program?

2012.02.09 17:34:28 EidA: a lot

2012.02.09 17:34:47 SandraS nods

2012.02.09 17:34:54 FulwahB: Thank you. It would help us

2012.02.09 17:35:08 EidA: I like Voicethread

2012.02.09 17:35:11 SandraS: Sometimes very small pieces of technology can be helpful.

2012.02.09 17:35:18 SandraS: Ah-- what is Voicethread, Eid?

25

2012.02.09 17:35:27 FulwahB: Yes. I have noticed that

2012.02.09 17:35:52 FulwahB: Yes. I like it too, but I haven't done it yet

2012.02.09 17:35:57 SandraS: Here's an example -- http://wordle.net -- this is a program that

creates a word image map of text you input

2012.02.09 17:36:09 SandraS: it's a great way to visualize one's writing and look at it differently

2012.02.09 17:36:53 SandraS: You have probably also learned that technology can really help
different types of learners.

2012.02.09 17:37:12 FulwahB: agrees

2012.02.09 17:37:13 BjB . o O ( voicethread is for auditory learners )

2012.02.09 17:37:21 EidA: http://voicethread.com/

2012.02.09 17:37:24 SandraS: Thanks, BJ.

2012.02.09 17:37:28 SandraS: Thanks, Eid.

26

2012.02.09 17:37:32 SandraS: I will check it out.

2012.02.09 17:38:10 SandraS: Why are you both studying education technology? Let's start
there...

2012.02.09 17:38:43 EidA: I'm a computer teacher

2012.02.09 17:38:52 FulwahB: Every class of my Ed Tec, I learn such a great tool which is very
effective in ED

2012.02.09 17:39:08 SandraS: Great!

2012.02.09 17:39:14 FulwahB: I haven't worked yet.

2012.02.09 17:39:19 JeffC left the room (signed off).

2012.02.09 17:39:31 SandraS: You'll be well prepared, Fulwah!

2012.02.09 17:39:48 EidA: Education and Technology are the life nowadays

2012.02.09 17:39:53 FulwahB: I'll be

2012.02.09 17:40:03 FulwahB: yes.

27

2012.02.09 17:40:28 SandraS: Let me give you another resource. Because NWP has always been
so involved with technology, they began a new website dedicated solely to technology. I'll give
you the URL and you can visit it for a few minutes. Then come back and we'll discuss more.

2012.02.09 17:40:36 SandraS: http://digitalis.nwp.org

2012.02.09 17:41:06 FulwahB: Ok

2012.02.09 17:41:34 EidA: sure

2012.02.09 17:42:29 SandraS: Again, this is a huge resource, and you can spend a lot of time
browsing.

2012.02.09 17:44:53 SandraS: Eid and Fulwah, are you back yet?

2012.02.09 17:45:07 FulwahB: Yes

2012.02.09 17:45:15 EidA: I'm back

2012.02.09 17:45:17 FulwahB: It's a huge one

2012.02.09 17:45:23 SandraS: OK. Eid, do you teach computre programming?

28

2012.02.09 17:45:23 FulwahB smiles

2012.02.09 17:45:33 EidA: amazing

2012.02.09 17:45:35 SandraS: Yes -- a huge resource.

2012.02.09 17:46:07 EidA: I teach high school students

2012.02.09 17:46:27 SandraS: If you teach programming, Eid, I was just thinking about the
Alice program -- geared towards teaching all levels of students how to program.

2012.02.09 17:46:29 SandraS: http://www.alice.org/

2012.02.09 17:46:45 SandraS: OK, any other questions about NWP?

2012.02.09 17:46:46 EidA: computer in general not programming

2012.02.09 17:46:52 SandraS: Ah--OK.

2012.02.09 17:47:29 SandraS: Fulwah, when you said that technology is so important today, I
was also thinking about how much of education is moving to online classes.

29

2012.02.09 17:47:52 EidA: I may use the digital site to do my next assignment

2012.02.09 17:48:01 SandraS: In some ways, the content management systems such as
Blackboard provide less flexibility and creativity than an open source system such as Moodle.

2012.02.09 17:48:07 SandraS: Oh, great, Eid!

2012.02.09 17:48:07 EidA: I like it

2012.02.09 17:48:11 SandraS: What is your next assignment?

2012.02.09 17:48:18 FulwahB: Yes. Everyting changes very quikly

2012.02.09 17:48:32 SandraS nods

2012.02.09 17:48:35 EidA: to participate in website or blog

2012.02.09 17:48:41 SandraS: And if the power isn't working, the technology doesn't work!

2012.02.09 17:48:58 SandraS: Ah -- yes, the Digital Is website has a tab for Community...

2012.02.09 17:49:01 FulwahB: Yes

30

2012.02.09 17:49:23 EidA: yeah, I like that

2012.02.09 17:49:26 SandraS: I teach two online classes and Blackboard was down today -- my
classes have essay exams due.

2012.02.09 17:49:38 SandraS: I'm sure they're very frustrated!

2012.02.09 17:49:54 FulwahB: Oh

2012.02.09 17:50:15 SandraS: The other thing that NWP does is to focus on teachers.

2012.02.09 17:50:20 EidA: sorry for that

2012.02.09 17:50:35 SandraS: So if you find articles on the NWP website, they're usually by
teachers who have studied their own classrooms.

2012.02.09 17:50:47 SandraS: You'll see that on the Digital Is website, too.

2012.02.09 17:51:04 SandraS: The teachers don't say, "Oh, I tried blogs, and it was wonderful,
and everyone was happy."

2012.02.09 17:51:17 SandraS: They tell you what the challenges are, what the difficulties and
joys are.

31

2012.02.09 17:51:24 SandraS: I like that. Very practical.

2012.02.09 17:51:30 SandraS: Useful.

2012.02.09 17:51:34 FulwahB: The teachers are the most important in a classroom

2012.02.09 17:51:46 EidA: I like that, too.

2012.02.09 17:51:51 SandraS nods.

2012.02.09 17:52:15 SandraS: I often think the students are the most important....they can learn
so much from each other.

2012.02.09 17:52:31 SandraS: If I can give them the resources and then get out of the way...

2012.02.09 17:52:52 FulwahB: Yes they would be too

2012.02.09 17:53:41 SandraS: When I use blogs, I like that students can read each other's work
so easily.

2012.02.09 17:53:42 EidA: Nowadys technology makes some teachers learn from their students

32

2012.02.09 17:53:47 SandraS: And they can comment easily.

2012.02.09 17:53:56 SandraS: I agree absolutely, Eid.

2012.02.09 17:54:10 EidA: some students know more than their teachers

2012.02.09 17:54:24 SandraS: Because technology changes so quickly, as Fulwah mentioned,

teachers need to be open to their students' knowledge.

2012.02.09 17:54:30 EidA: in tech stuff

2012.02.09 17:54:32 SandraS: Yes- precisely. Students can teach us.

2012.02.09 17:54:44 SandraS: But we have to be humble enough to be teachable...

2012.02.09 17:54:54 FulwahB: Sharing and exchanging ideas are very great

2012.02.09 17:55:02 SandraS: I agree, Fulwah.

2012.02.09 17:55:08 EidA: Yes

2012.02.09 17:55:18 SandraS: OK, we're at the end of the hour. Any final questions or ideas?

33

2012.02.09 17:55:44 EidA: Just want to thank you all

2012.02.09 17:55:57 EidA: amazing hour

2012.02.09 17:56:05 SandraS: I am glad to meet you. And I will say "Shukran" to you both!

2012.02.09 17:56:05 BjB: The next WriteTalk discussion will take place on March 8

2012.02.09 17:56:30 FulwahB: Thank you all

2012.02.09 17:56:34 SandraS bows to BJ and David

2012.02.09 17:56:36 FulwahB: Wow

2012.02.09 17:56:40 DavidW smiles

2012.02.09 17:56:47 BjB: Thanks, Sandy. And thank you, Fulwah and Eid for participating in

34

2012.02.09 17:57:00 SandraS smiles at Fulwah

2012.02.09 17:57:08 BjB waves goodnight

2012.02.09 17:57:15 SandraS: Have a wonderful evening!

2012.02.09 17:57:20 EidA: you too

2012.02.09 17:57:23 FulwahB: You too

2012.02.09 17:57:27 SandraS jumps on her hoverboard and whooshes off

2012.02.09 17:57:34 SandraS left the room (signed off).

2012.02.09 17:57:38 BjB left the room (signed off).

2012.02.09 17:58:15 EidA: do I have to sign out in order to get the transcript ?

2012.02.09 17:58:51 DavidW: Do you see "Logout" at the top right of the web page - in yellow?

35

2012.02.09 17:58:56 DavidW: You can just close the window if you want
