Rolling Element Bearing Failure Stages Stage 4 Analysis Considerations For Vibration Analysis Diagnostics
Visual Inspection Visual indications of damage are usually present on the surface features of the bearing component(s) at this point. The faults initiated on one component are likely to progress to the rolling elements, alternate raceways and cages. Early Warning Overall (HFD) ultrasonic energy trends continue to augment in response to impact sources and friction from the developing surface faults. The overall HFD energy can drop drastically before total bearing failure when sharp edges are smoothed from internal impacting and debris in the bearing. HFD amplitudes are likely to jump immediately before failure. Bearing defect coefficient peaks and harmonics are usually noticeable in the ultrasonic demodulated spectrum. Some advanced faults can have sidebands spaced at +/- 1x RPM or other defects (i.e. +/- FTF) Spectrum Bearing defect coefficients are usually well developed in the vibration velocity spectrum at this point. As the wear increases, more peaks in the form of bearing defect harmonics. Additional bearing faults or running sidebands can also appear. Due to clearance and/or geometry changes, defects can shift in frequency or disappear altogether into a raised noise floor. Time Waveform The waveforms collected on low-speed machinery (-600 RPM) can probably indicate amplified peaks spaced at one or more bearing defect frequencies. Increase in random noise is common in the TWF. Maintenance Action The machine should not be allowed to function at this stage. Total failure is probable and can probably not be limited to the defective bearing, but can affect other machine components. Bearings usually have less than 1% of the L10 design life remaining.

Rolling Element Bearing Failure Stages Stage 2 Analysis Considerations For Vibration Analysis Diagnostics
Visual Inspection No visual indications of distress on the rolling element surfaces or bearing raceway. Early faults are most likely to occur in areas of maximum Hertzian Shear Stress 25100 microns (1-4 mils) below the metal surfaces. Surface faults or wear patterns may be indicated by magnification. Early Warning In response to friction and impact sources from inadequate lubrication or developing subsurface faults, ultrasonic energy (HFD Overall) trends continue to increase. Bearing Defect coefficient are usually visible in the ultrasonic demodulated spectrum at this stage. Spectrum Bearing defect coefficients are not usually visible, at this time, in the vibration velocity spectrum. Low-level peaks can be visible in the Vibration acceleration spectrum. In some rare cases, bearing natural frequencies can be excited and be visible in the velocity spectrum in the 30k-120k-XPM frequency range. Most of these peaks are non-synchronous and can probably have sidebands spaced at +/- 1x RPM. Time Waveform Impact signatures from early bearing faults are usually buried in the noise floor of time waveforms collected on machinery operating above 600 RPM. The waveforms collected on low-speed machinery (-600 RPM) can point to amplified peaks spaced at the outer or inner raceway frequency (BPFO, BPFI). A 2-4 shaft rotations time block ought to be specified from optimum TWF analysis of low speed bearings. Maintenance Action Lubricate bearing that are based on OEM recommendations. Based on application or machinery criticality, continue to trend vibration signatures on normal or reduced intervals. Bearings usually have up to a 10% of L10 design life remaining.
