Coke Studio is indeed an inspired step by Coca-Cola for having created a platform where renowned as well as upcoming and less mainstream musicians from various genres can collaborate musically.

Central to our third edition is the need to explore the intricacies of inspiration, creation and evolution, and to discover how the elements of reason, will, resolve and form come together and culminate in the realization of dreams and goals. True to the desire to retain and revere individuality, Coke Studios wings span the entire breadth and length of our soil: from the rugged custodians of the Suc tradition to suave urbane men and women, from indigenous ballads to universal kalams. This season as the wheel rotates, a growing palette of unique colors, avors and sounds come together and contribute to enrich the Cok e Studio circle. FEATURED ARTISTS

ABIDA PARVEEN
Iconic, profound, subliminal to wax lyrical of Abida Parveen is natural. A legend both at home and abroad for her grace and soulful Su strains, Parveen over the years has stayed true to her classical origins, which she mastered under the tutelage of Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. Having started off her career from Radio Pakistan, Hyderabad, she credits her husband, late Ghulam Hussain Sheikh, a respected director of music at Radio Pakistan, for its success. A recipient of the 1982 Presidents Pride of Performance Award and the 2005 Sitarae-Imtiaz, Parveen is indeed one of the foremost exponents of kaa poetry and ghazal singing in Pakistan.

AMANAT ALI
Barely 23 years old, Amanat Ali has a wide fan base, which includes pop and classical music followers. Brought up in a household where religious hymns and noahs would be oftrecited, Ali broke off from the traditional path and chose a career in music- and lm-dom. His rst break came with winning the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest in India and since then he has lent his voice to Bollywood songs (the hummable Khabar Nahi in Dostana) and also released his album Kohram in April, 2009.

ARIEB AZHAR
As Arieb Azhar renders the works of Su virtuosos, his voice resonates with singular devotion. Having won acclaim in his home country, Azhar likes the quietness of Croatia where he is based and works on his music recordings. He has so far released one album Wajj, heavily inspired by the poetry of Sarmad Sehbai, Khawaja Ghulam Farid and Baba Bulleh Shah, and is working on a second one, which is a collaborative effort with musicians from across the country. 7

ARIF LOHAR
There are composers, then there are singers and nally there are entertainers. Meet Arif Lohar once and you know that he is an amalgamation of all of the above an artist extraordinaire. His jovial personality, the highly-infectious grin he sports and the trademark chimta, which he inherited from his father and always accompanies him in a performance, simply sets him apart from other exponents of folk and Su music. His last album Jugni came out in 2005, which was highly popular. A recipient of the 2005 Presidents Pride of Performance Award, Lohar is well-known on the international circuit and has performed for various state

FAKIR JUMAN SHAH


Led by Fakir Juman Shah, the Shah Jo Raag Fakirs are continuing the over 250-year-old tradition of singing at Bhit Shah, the fakirs voices piercing the air at the shrine every single night. Each fakir, in fact, performs a different day of the week from sundown to sunrise, for life. Custodians of one of the greatest mystical traditions, the rhythmic kalams they recite in praise of the great mystic Shah Abdul Latif, accompanied by the unique ve-stringed instrument, dhamboora, entrances one and all. Despite belonging to one of the remotest corners of Pakistan, the fakirs have visitors from the West and also travel abroad to showcase their unique work.!!

MEESHA SHAFI
Brought up on a solid grounding of arts, culture, acting, singing and dancing, Meesha Shas work encompasses all this and more she holds a degree in art from the prestigious National College of Arts and also models. Indeed, her multifaceted personality and versatility add to her image. Sha is currently the lead vocalist for the percussions-based fusion band Overload, where she is equally at ease setting her powerhouse vocals to Urdu, English and Punjabi poetry and prose.

NOORI ALI KAZIM NOOR ZEHRA


As one of the leading names in Pakistans music industry, Noori is often credited for revitalising rock music for Pakistans youth with the release of their rst album Suno Ke Mein Hoon Jawan (2003) and then their second album Peeli Patti Aur Raja Jani Ki Gol Dunya (2005). Over a span of seven years the band has put out two albums, have performed in more than 400 concerts, self-produced 10 music videos, won three major music awards and are currently working on their third studio album. Joining the brothers this season are their parents, Ali Kazim as vocalist and Noor Zehra on sagar veena. 11

To carve ones own niche when you hail from the lineage of the iconic Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is an uphill task, but that is exactly what his nephews

RIZWAN & MUAZZAM

have done. Rizwan and Muazzam lead the ve centuries old gharana, following the traditional qawwal arrangement replete with a chorus, tabla, harmonium and choral. The two released their rst album Sacrice of Love in 1999 and are currently signed to Peter Gabriels inuential Real World record label. The group aims to broaden the appeal of traditional qawwali and garner international appreciation.

SANAM MARVI
Sanam Marvi is one of the youngest and most popular classical singers from the interior of Sindh. Her father was the renowned singer Fakir Ghulam Rasool and hence she was inculcated into classical singing at a very young age. Having studied Su poetry extensively, Marvi aims to spread the Suc belief in love and peace through her music to global and local audiences. Marvi is in her element with compositions of mystics such as Baba Bulleh Shah, Baba Sheikh Farid, Sachal Sarmast and one of the greatest poets of the Sindhi language, Shah Abdul Latif.

TINA SANI
With Coke Studio 2010, Tina Sani not only makes her rst appearance in the series but also returns to a recording studio after a hiatus of 16 years. Sanis distinction has been her contemporary outlook to ghazal-singing, which has been refreshing all the way. Be it the haunting Bahaar Aye, the melodious Koi Baat Karo, the poignant Chotti si Ghalat Fehmi, the lively and soulful Kharee Neem kay Neechay or Iqbal Banos inimitable and haunting Dasht-eTanhai, Sanis rened and measured experiments have made even the harshest critic concede her air.

ZEB & HANIYA


One glance at the body of their work and it registers immediately that the duo delve and excel at being experimental. Be it English, Urdu, Persian or Dari, Zebunissa Bangash and Haniya Aslam can reset their mode both musically and vocally with great ease and deliver brilliant performances. A household name across Pakistan with their debut album Chup (2008), Zeb and Haniya maintain a funky outlook to their work and with their classy style appeal to a broad base of the audience.

AUNTY DISCO PROJECT


Their eccentric call-sign is a good cue to what to expect from these young, not-soaverage boys a lot out of the ordinary. Hugely popular in the Karachi underground music scene for their alternative rock ever since its formation in 2006, the bands current line-up comprises of Omar Bilal Akhtar, Ali Alam, Yasir Qureshi, Rahayl Siddiqui and Giles Goveas. Their debut album, Aunty Disco Project , which was independently released recently, was well received. !

ENTITY PARADIGM
The underground circuit may have been small, but Entity Paradigm (EP) is Lahores most famous success story for the nation. Known for playing varied genres, such as alternative rock, rap and rock fusion, its debut album Irtiqa was regarded as the rst mainstream concept album to be released by a Pakistani act. After a three-year-long hiatus, EP announced its ofcial return in 2009. The current line-up, which includes Fawad Khan, Ahmed Ali Butt, Salman Albert, Waqar Ahmed Khan and Hassaan Khalid, is working on its second album.

KARAVAN
When pop ruled the airwaves, these men made the nation rock and groove to their thunderous drumming and electrifying guitar-playing. Regarded as Pakistans premier rock band, Karavan with some shufes now comprises of guitar guru Asad Ahmed, powerhouse vocalist Tanseer Dar, groovy bassist Sameer Ahmed and popular drummer Alan Smith. With four albums under their belt, they are gearing up for the release of their latest album Saraa Jahaan.

BAQIR ABBAS
Baqir Abbas belongs to the small but highlytalented set of autists who have kept this ancient instrument playing in Pakistan. A Lahori tutored by another ute great, his uncle Ghulam Shabbir, Abbas is a seasoned instrumentalist who has lent his signature ute sound to works of both classical and popular singers, including Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Jawad Ahmed, Hamid Ali Khan, Junaid Jamshed, Salamat Ali Khan, Strings and Hadiqa Kayani.

NOOR ZEHRA
A music enthusiast, Noor Zehra Kazim's relationship with it spans over 40 years. Daughter of Raza Kazim, the founder of the esteemed Sanjan Nagar Institute of Arts and Philosophy, Zehra has aided her father in furthering the development of the stringed instrument sagar veena and is currently Pakistans sole sagar veena player. Her formal musical training began during 1971 with Rajeshwari Datta in London, England and later at the Ali Akbar Khan College for Music in Berkely, USA. She has performed with her sagar veena at music festivals from Japan to Norway.

SADIQ SAMEER
With that genteel plucking of the rubab, for Sadiq Sameer it is not a difcult to have his audience enraptured. This virtuoso performer has his fair share of rubab fans as he has been a xture at both the national television and radio for decades. Carrying on the legacy of his teacher, Ustaad Mohammed Umer one of the nest exponents of the rabab from Afghanistan and who taught it rst in the West in the 1970s Sameer teaches the instrument at two institutes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His tunes are also inuenced by the works of Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Mohammad and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He brings the Old World alive for us once again this season.

HOUSE BAND
At Coke Studio, the House Band is a vital part of the sound created. Be it the violinist, the pianist, the bassist or the vocalist, each member brings their own unique streak yet molds to suit anothers sensibility. Here the House Band talks about their experiences and the ever-evolving work dynamics at Coke Studio

ASAD AHMED
GUITARIST
With Coke Studio I have had to relearn my guitar-playing. Personally as a guitarist I am used to plugging in and playing hard rock. Combining Western instruments with Eastern sensibilities meant stripping down all the applications and plucking my strings at a classical scale the note playing is completely different. ! Asad Ahmed on how Coke Studio has inuenced his guitarplaying. He has been part of the House Band since season two.

BABAR ALI KHANNA


PERCUSSIONIST
In this season of Coke Studio there will be a lot of Susm and it isnt just conned to that originating from one nook of the country. Seraiki, Sindhi, Dari, Punjabi, Turkish the sounds are varied and so are the artists. There are so many songs and instruments that people would hearing for the rst time. Babar AlliKhanna on what to expect in Coke Studio 3. He has been part of the House Band since season one.

KEYBOARDIST
Coke Studio is a great initiative and has brought change in a positive manner. Generally, playing for every artist is a pleasure in its own way because they all bring in a different style of arrangement, composition and sound. ! Jaffar Ali Zaidi on being part of Coke Studio. He has been associated with the venture since season two. 27

JAVED IQBAL

VIOLINIST
Coke Studio was a highly enjoyable experience. I followed a lot of notes but improvised as well based on the tempo of the song. Doing jugal bundi and just following your own mood has its own fun. ! Javed Iqbal on participating in Coke Studio. This is his second season.

KAMRAN MANNU ZAFAR


BASSIST
Coke Studio has changed sound wise and for the better. The house band has expanded and each of us gives the other feedback. The collaborations have produced spectacular results some of which have surprised us even. ! Mannu on how Coke Studio has evolved over the three seasons. He has been part of the House Band since season one.

LOUIS GUMBY PINTO


DRUMMER
The direction in which this show is going is denitely more controlled. We are more structured, more focused. Every year Coke Studio is a unique experience. Every person involved brings something to the table. Of course, the way the artist sounds also determines the quality of the overall piece but as musicians we try to keep a unique approach to each of them. Gumby on the need to understand different music forms. He has been part of Coke Studio since season one.

The music is adventurous and we have a blast here. I have been forced into situations that I would have never foreseen myself to be in. Its amazing to be exposed to the local musicians and learning from them. For me a million avenues have opened courtesy Coke Studio. !

Its an evolving process and we have all matured with it. Every time a new artist comes in they bring their own energy. The House Band may be the same but you change and evolve. So you reach a point where there is successful unison of energies. Its like being part of the bigger energy, creating it And that is fusion.

BACKING VOCALIST
It was great experience learning experience: we learnt two new languages, Dari and Pashto, and again they were different harmonies. We were working with the best of the best but most importantly, the work environment was relaxed, it was like being part of a family... we were all taken care of really well. Sanam Saeed on being part of Coke Studio. This is her rst season as vocalist. 33

MULTI-PERCUSSIONIST
Auxiliary act or multi-percussionists, they add elements that are not upfront. So being part of the house band I added elements that are subtle and contribute to the overall feel of the music.! ! Sikandar Mufti on his contribution to Coke Studio. This is his rst season. ! 34

Its been an educating experience for me, as I was abroad for a long time and even the music I produced was in English. I was walked through the Eastern notes of Sa-Re-Ga-MaPa and also came in touch with contemporary Pakistani music. This understanding of music not only widens your interest but also makes you appreciate your culture.
