Today 17 nations are believed to have offensive biological weapons programs to defend anthrax. The first pandemic in Europe known as "Black Bane" was recorded in 1613 and caused more than 60,000 deaths. The first epidemic in the United States occurred in the early 18th century. The earliest known description of anthrax was made in 1491 BC in writings from Egypt
Causes of Anthrax
Anthrax is caused by the organism Bacillus anthracis. In some parts of the world, this can be found in cattle or other hoofed mammals. Respiratory infections of Anthrax have cold and flu-like symptoms for several days followed by pneumonia and severe respiratory collapse. Gastrointestinal infection in humans is most often caused by consuming anthrax-infected meat and is characterized by vomiting of blood, severe diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Lesions have been found in the intestines and in the mouth and throat. on the skin anthrax infection in humans presents as a boillike skin lesion that eventually forms an ulcer with a black center.
