TEST I
1. Air in a closed system changes states from state a to state b, as shown in the figure.

When the change follows the path acb, 84 kJ of heat flows into the system and 32 kJ of work is done by the system. Determine the heat transfer when the system changes along:

i. Path adb, if 10.5 kJ of work is done by the system.

ii. The curved path ba, if work done on the system is 21 kJ.

2.

A gas in a piston-cylinder assembly at an initial pressure of 150 kPa undergoes a thermodynamic cycle consisting of the following processes: Process 1-2: constant volume heat addition of 235 kJ/kg, Process 2-3: adiabatic expansion back to the initial pressure with changes of internal energy of -70 kJ1kg. Process 3-1: constant pressure compression back to the initial volume with heat removal of 200 kJlkg. i. Show the processes on a P-v diagram with appropriate labels. [4 marks] [6 marks] [2 marks]

ii. Evaluate the energy balance during each processes. iii. Determine the total work of the cycle.

3.

Refrigerant-134a in a rigid vessel at a pressure of 1 MPa and a temperature of 100C was cooled until the pressure drops to 500 kPa. i. Determine the final state (quality and temperature) of the refrigerant. [2 marks] [&marks] [&marks]

ii. Sketch the process on a P-v and T-v diagrams.

iii. Find the pressure at which the refrigerant starts to condense.
