Measuring With A Microscope

Background Metric units useful for measuring small objects: 1 meter (m) = 1000 millimeters (mm) 1 mm = 1000 micrometers (m) Field Diameter of Classroom Microscope Magnification 40X Field diameter 4,500 m

100X 1,800 m

400X 450 m

Objectives: 1. Learn how to estimate the size of a specimen under the microscope 2. Practice estimating specimen size 3. Practice drawing to scale

Procedure/Results Use a prepared paramecia slide for the following three diagrams.

Specimen Name

-Observe and draw several paramecia at 40X. Draw to scale. -Estimate the number of lengthwise cells that would fit across the diameter of the field of view. -To estimate the size of a single paramecium, divide the diameter (see chart in background information) by the number of cells you have estimated would fit across. -Be sure to include units when you record the size. Critical Thinking Questions 1. What happens to the size of the field of view as the magnification increases? Use data to support.

2. Baxter reasoned that since the specimen is larger at 400X, he should always start his search at that magnification. Based on what you have learned from this activity, convince him that he is incorrect.
