Linkin Park, when writing Castle of Glass, took into consideration the effect of war on soldiers and their

families, and the hardships they endure during times of war, to promote a video game that highlights the tough challenges that face these families. The song uses both calm and forceful lyrics to depict a very deep message about lives of people in the armed forces away from the battlefield. Linkin Park is an American band with a genre consisting of a mix of emo and electronic rock. A trademark of this band is that they are loud at parts, yet also calm at others to create contrast and a deeper meaning. They started out as a group of high school friends and quickly rose to international fame. The band was trying to depict a meaning for people to interpret in different ways. However, the song was written for a video game. The video game focuses on the harsh emotions of soldiers away from battle, such as a soldier coming home from a war and feeling like he doesnt belong and must work his/her way back into society. The game is about a family whose loved one is killed in action and about how the family feels sad and dragged down, but they learn that he was an inspiration for them and the son follows his fathers footsteps and becomes a soldier. The genre fits well for this plot because emo is a mix of melodic and rock music, and the melodic parts are made for the listener to feel sad, but then the hard rock comes in and makes the listener feel expressive and brave by the words. Also, soldiers usually feel different or uncomfortable when they are trying to fit back in, but really are part of a big thing holding families and friends together, as shown in the songs lyrics. Im only a crack in this castle of glass and wash the sorrow off my skin are two lyrics that support this claim by showing that the soldiers are apart of a big family (castle of glass) and that they need to get rid of their sorrow from war and fit back in (wash the sorrow off my skin). As a result, the emo style of music depicts a meaning about tough challenges faced in the lives of soldiers and their families, who despite the sorrow, remain brave.
