Attitudes What is an attitude?

Ø “An attitude is a hypothetical construct that


represents an individual's degree of like or dislike for
an item.”

Ø “the way we think, feel, and act toward some aspect


of our environment”.

Ø “a learned predisposition to respond in a consistently


favorable or unfavorable manner with respect to a
given object”.

Ø Cognitive Component :
§ Belief about specific object.

Ø Effective Component :
§ Emotions or feelings about specific object.

Ø Behavioral Component:
§ Behavioral intention with respect to specific
object.
The Importance of Attitudes

Ø Attitudes warn of potential behavioral problems:


§ Managers should do things that generate the positive attitudes
that reduce absenteeism and turnover.
Ø Attitudes influence behaviors of employees:
§ Managers should focus on helping employees become more
productive to increase job satisfaction.
Ø Employees will try to reduce dissonance unless:
§ Managers identify the external sources of dissonance.
§ Managers provide rewards compensating for the dissonance.
FORMATION OF ATTITUDE

Ø Attitude is learned by the experience of the social context around


us.

Ø The basic processes through which we learn attitudes remain the


same throughout our life.

Ø as we grow older the attitudes we learn may be more complex, and


the ones we already hold may become more resistant to change.

Ø The influence of the family, schooling, and peer groups waxes and
wanes as we grow .

GENETIC FACTORS
Ø Genetic factor plays a small but important role in the
formation of attitude

Ø Such attitude is inherited from our parents

Ø It influences general dispositions of attitude

Ø General disposition influences the positive and negative


emotions of attitude

Ø such tendencies influences our evaluation of many


aspects of attitude
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Ø Environment plays a critical part in the development


of the attitude.

Ø Most pervasive is the influence of the social


environment like: family, friends, neighborhood,
place of work, society etc.

Ø People adjust their attitude to conform to those who


are most prevalent in the social group to which they
belong.
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ATTITUDE
POSITIVE
Ø A positive attitude is simply an inclination or leaning towards
the positive aspects of any situation.

Ø A positive attitude focus on the hope and opportunity available


within the situation.

Ø People with the positive attitude are happier, healthier, and


live longer.
NEGATIVE
Ø On the other hand negative attitude inclines towards the
negativity of the situation.

Ø A negative attitude is self defeating.

Ø Negative attitude saps one’s energy, focus and motivation.


WORK RELATED ATTITUDE
Work related attitudes are the relatively lasting
feelings, beliefs behavioral tendencies an
employee has toward the various aspects of job.
Positive Attitude:

iv. Organizational commitment.
v. Job Satisfaction.
Negative Attitude:
vii. Absenteeism.
viii. Turnover.
ix. Theft.
x. Disciplinary problems.
CONSISTENCY OF ATTITUDE
Ø HIGH CONSISTENCY
§ I would probably make a good actor.
§ I ‘m not always the person appeared to be.
§ I can deceive people by being friendly when I really
dislike them.
§ In order to get along and be liked, I tend to be what
people expect. me to be rather than anything else.

Ø LOW CONSISTENCY
§ My behavior is usually an expression of my true feeling.
§ I have never been good at games like monopoly and
housie.
§ I can argue only for ideas that I already believe.
§ I find it hard to imitate the attitude of others people.
CHANGE IN ATTITUDE

ØAttitude once formed are very difficult to change.


ØEspecially if they are uniformly positive or
negative in nature.
ØChanging attitudes is much more easier if they
are ambivalent in nature.

Attitudes can be changed by two technique:


vi. Persuasive technique.
vii. Cognitive dissonance.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUE
Persuasion is defined as an effort to change others
attitude through the use of various kind of messages

Three most important elements in the persuasive


process.

vii. The Source: Credible, Attractive, Motive.


viii. The Message: Objective, Simple, Emotionally
arousing.
ix. The Audience: Self-esteem, Educated.
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
It is defined as a state of discomfort that a person
experiences
when there is inconsistency between Attitude and
Behavior.

There are three ways in which


cognitive dissonance can be
reduced:
v. Changing attitude or behavior: changing will make
our behavior and attitude consistent.
vi. Gathering Information: gather information to support
our attitude and behavior.
vii. Trivialization: by ignoring your behavior or attitude
WHY POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND NOT
NEGATIVE ATTITUDE
Ø A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative
attitude repels them.

Ø Positive attitude promotes better health, while negative


attitude worsens a persons health.

Ø positive attitude helps to handle stress and problems


better than those who have a negative attitude.

Ø Positive attitude have filling effect, while negative


attitude have sapping effect on the people.

Ø Positive attitude have a healthy self-image, while


negative attitude have a twofold draw back.
