Although Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) have beneficial uses,

when combined with Antihypertensives they can be very dangerous. Still, the studies are

incomplete, but early results show that the use of NSAIDs can increase the blood

pressure of Hypertensive patients. This is especially true for antihypertensive

medications, which act using the renal prostaglandin cascade and some calcium blockers,

yet not all NSAIDs react the same. Some NSAIDs used are more likely to elevate Blood

Pressure, such as piroxicam and more commonly Ibuprofen, while others like sulindac

are less likely to cause an elevation.

The medical team must be careful to screen medications for possible reaction and

educate their patients as to the safest actions to take. One alternative is Acetaminophen,

better known as Tylenol, for the pain, but this does not have any type of anti-

inflammatory chemicals. There are several more listed, but as with any medication there

are possible side effects. Each person should be evaluated by medical personnel to

determine the effectiveness of the treatment.
