FUNERAL BENEFITS

Section 46 (1) (f) of the Act provides for payment to the eldest surviving member of the family of an insured person who has died, towards the expenditure on the funeral of the deceased insured person, Or where the insured person did not have a family or was not living with his family at the time of his death, to the person who actually incurs the expenditure on the funeral of the deceased insured person (to be known as funeral expenses) Provided that the amount of such payment shall not exceed such amount(Rs 5000) or as may be prescribed by the Central Government and the claim for such payment shall be made within three months of the death of the insured person or within such extended period as the Corporation or any officer or authority authorised by it in this behalf may allow.

POINTS TO NOTE
Person entitled to any benefits provided in the act shall not be entitled to receive any similar benefit under other enactment such as Workmens compensation or Maternity Benefit Act. An insured person cannot receive for the same period:a) Both sickness and maternity benefit b) Sickness benefit and temporary disablement benefit c) Both Maternity and temporary disablement benefit Where a person is entitled to more than one benefits, he shall have to choose which benefit he shall receive. Payment of funeral expenses shall be made by the Branch Office within 15 days after the receipt of claim, complete in all respects.
