WRITING AN EFFECTIVE LETTER
Put the date that your letter was written in the upper right hand corner. Then skip
aline.
Put the name and address of the person you're sending the letter to just above the
letter itself, on the left hand side. Don’t forget to put the person’s title before their
name (in this case, that would be Professor). After the name and address, skip a
line.
3. Under the name and address, write: Dear Professor Brinkley:
Then skip a line,
4. Your letter must be polite. You are not attacking Professor Brinkley, you are
pointing out that his book, though an excellent textbook in many ways, falls short,
in the sort of material you need for the first major assignment in your school
district.
5. Your letter must be specific. Talk about why his book falls short in terms of the
assignment that you are supposed to complete. After the body of the letter, skip a
line.
6. Sign offon your letter by writing “Yours” or “Sincerely” with a comma after it.
Below this, skip a line, then write your name, your grade, and our school’s
address. It would look something like this:
