updated: 12/18/13 We believe the purpose of assessment is to support student learning by guiding teachers in curriculum design and providing

directional feedback to students. Assessment can be based on many types of teacher observation and student reflection. We use assessment to help students build confidence by setting, understanding, and meeting learning goals with the support of teachers. We strive to foster a culture where students feel safe enough to take risks and embrace challenges. We believe that students will be engaged in the learning process when assessment is not the sole focus but a tool for encouraging growth and reflection. Assessment empowers students to develop a love of learning and independence. Early adolescent learners possess unique developmental needs. We acknowledge that students come from a wide variety of assessment experiences in the elementary years, and in Middle School we help them transition to a common understanding of assessment as feedback on the learning process. Moreover, we provide a foundation from which they take ownership of learning and become reflective and goal-oriented as they move to the Upper School.
