screen

The movement for part A occurs in the vertical place, moving forward and backwards. The L.H. making big forward circular movement with the note produced just before the hand reaches full extension. The R.H does a sharp straight movement forward and back. Starting with a movement back [1]-forward [2], hold [3]. Back forward-hold etc.

In the video you will see a series of shots, that show the full gesture from a series of views. You are asked to follow [with your arms] the rhythmic movement on-screen as closely as is possible for you. 1. Prepare the space and shakers. 2. Press play on the video 3. You will see a title shot, this will last for seven seconds before the score begins. During this time you should place the shakers in your chosen direction in your hands and bring to a right angled position in front of your mid rift. 4. After the title shot, the piece begins and you should proceed to follow the movement as closely as possible. 5. The end is marked with a credits page [7 seconds] during which time you are free to lower your arms to mark the end of the performance.

DESIGNING YOUR 4D SHAKERS In this piece you are required to make your own shakers, to bring about a sound quality unique to each performance. In designing these you should aim for the LH and RH shaker to have sounds that are distinct from each other. Each shaker should also produce a substantially different sound when played horizontally and vertically. This will be affected by the following factors and it is encouraged for performers to play around with the these to find a suitable sound. Materials for the vessel: bottle, tin, small pot, [metal, plastic, etc.] Range of fillings: Rice, Lentils, pasta, beans, a mix, How full: how full you fill the vessel with affect the sound.

The movement for part B occurs in a horizontal plane, moving in a sideways motion. The L.H. producing a note by a quick movement sideways toward the R.H [with the sound produced in front of the body]and a slow [silent[ move back. The R.H makes small sharp motions sideways left and right to produce the semiquaver motif. Although you are recommended to familiarise with the co-ordination of the action gesture, do not watch the video before the performance, [or previous performances]. This is a one take performance that relies on your unfamiliarity with the subject.
