Chronicling the generational changes of one extended family, from the days of Ellis lsland to the days of TV dinners, the writer-director delivers a stirring eulogy for everything lost and found while our nation changed from straw-hat Fourth of Julys to Levittown suburbia. As reflected in the lives of the Krischinsky family-immigrant Sam (Armin Mueller-Stahl), his brothers (Lou Jacobi, Leo Fuchs, lsrael Rubinek), his son Jules (Aidan Quinn), his grandson Michael (Elijah Wood), and their various wives and cousins (including Joan Plowright, Elizabeth Perkins and Kevin Pollak)the permanent parade of changes is so incremental that no one sees what's being lost until it's long gone.
