Research Question:

Can we make an efficient homemade calorimeter?

Background information:

In the world of today there are many situations in which people try to create systems which prevent the exchange of heat and energy. This type of system are called isolated. Isolated systems are said to be imposible in nature as they have to obey the law of their total energy being equivalent to their total mass. Still, we are going to try and create something similar. This type of system can serve as model when approximating many situations in our real world. The closest we have to an isolated system is our universe.

Aim:

The aim of this experiment is to test which of two different homemade calorimeters is going to be more effective when tested in an experiment. One is going to be made up of aluminium foil and polysterine and the other one of binlineal and bubble rap.

Hypothesis:

I predict that the polystirene and aluminium foil one is going to be more effective when trying to insulate heat rather than the other one made up of bubble rap and binlineal.

Independent variable Initial temperature of the water

Dependent variable Final temperature of the water

Controlled variable Amount of water put in

Use identical Boxes

Apparatus:

-Two identical boxes -Water -Thermometer

Method:

1) Collect all the necessary apparatus. 2) Measure the water's temperature outside the box. 3) Make a hole on each box. 4) Within the hole you should place a thermometer. 5) After this you should proceed to put some water in it. 6) Let some time pass by. 7) Proceed to measure its temperature inside the box.
