Obviously, changing the type of yarn and color will produce a different result and scale, so it can be very rewarding to experiment. YARNS YYarne are avallabe in a range of weights, rom 3ply to extra chun. Because yams may vary from one manufacturer to another and certainly change from ane fser to another only generic yarn types are indicated in tis book—akhough smooth yarns are recommended for crochet-—and no needle or hook sizes are given You should be aware (of the properties of diferent yarns, however from the fulness of cotton 1 the chtisty of wool because the construction ofa yarn wil affect its behavour and characterises, and so wil influence the end result. Experimentation is key Try using diferent tensions and ifin doubt, Use 2 smaller needlethock size than usual among embroidery threads, IF you realy want to create a lors’ shop (or a greengrocers counter) separate your yarns into color groups and keep these in trarsparent plastic contaners so that you have a palette of colors to work with Dont limit yourself to lating yarn and look for interesting colors KNITTING NEEDLES ‘As already mentioned, no needle sizes are spectied in ths book but you will want to vary your choice of needle depending on the yarn you are using Pas of kniting needles are made in 2 variety of lengths Most are aurinum, athovgh largersiae needles are made of plastic to reduce their weight. For mast of the designs inthis book. a conventional pair of needles is used, but two ddouble-pointed needles are needed to make 2 cord, and four double-pointed needies where there ie knitting in the round Baraboo nedies are avalable in many szes A varigy of efron yam typer an woah. 100 instructions SNAIL Yarn Space dyed 4-ply wool in beige and browns (A) and 3-ply wool in brown (8) Hooks Two crochet hooks, one a sze smaller than the other Barras Baiting fe wire, 2 smal back beads METHOD SHELL (st side) Using larger hook and A make Sch, join with ss into a ring, Ast round (RS) 1h, 4s, 2c Sd in rng = Now workin continuous founds without joining and working into the back strand of ‘each st 3de in each of next 7 ts, Zt in each of nex 7 ss, without working the last wrap ‘of each st (see page 13). ter in next st, tat in ret st yrh and pull yarn through all 4 loops con hook Fasten off SHELL (second side) A fist side, but working al sts from ** in the front strand of each st and noting that the back ofthe werk will be the RS. SLIPKNOT Putting slipknot on the needle makes ‘the frst stitch of the cast-on. Loop the yarn around two fingers ofthe left hand, ‘the ball end on top. Dip the needle into the loop, catch the ball end ofthe yar, and pull it through the loop. Pull the ends of the sam to tighten the knot. Tighten the ball fend to bring the knot up to the needle, CASTING ON ‘There are several cast-on methods, each with their own merits, THUMB METHOD. Sometimes caled long-tal cast-on, this uses a single needle and produces an elastic edge, ‘Leaving an end about three times the length of the required cast-on, put a sipcnot on the needle. Holing the yarn fend inthe left hand, tae the left thumb under the yarn and upward. Insert the needle inthe loop made on the thumb. \Use the ball end of the yarn to make knit stitch, sipping the loop off the thumb. Pull the yarn end to close the stitch up to the needle. Continue making stitches in this way. The result looks lke a row of garter stitch because the yarn has been kritted off the thumb, CABLE CASTON. This two-needie method gives a firm ed with the appearance of a rope, Puta slipknot on one needle. Use the ‘ther needle and the bal end of the to knit into the loop on the left-hand nee ‘without sipping it off Transfer the new st to the lefthand needle, Insert the right-hand needle between new stitch and the next stitch, and then: make another stitch as before, Cortinue ‘making stitches inthis way KNITTED CASTON Make a cable cast-on as above, but instead ‘of knitting between stitches, insert the right hand needle in the front of each stitch in usual way. This gives a softer edge than the cable method. 8 BEFORE YOU BEGIN NOTES ON CROCHET Understanding how to make simple stitches is the key to constructing interesting shapes in crochet.
